Schiit Audio’s Wotan Stereo Power Amp Might Finally Convince You to Join the Clan

Lots of power, practical integration and control, and a reasonable price tag make the Wotan power amp worth consideration, especially if you own other Schiit Audio components.

Schiit Audio Wotan Stereo Power Amplifier Front Angle Silver

Schiit Audio’s success should not come as a surprise to anyone and that’s not just because of their savvy marketing and focus on value. They continue to innovate and engineer great sounding Schiit that is manufactured domestically. In the amplifier category, their new $1,999 “flagship” Wotan offers a number of new innovations that make it unique.

Pro Tip: If you are looking for a lower-priced two-channel power amp, Schitt Audio also offers the Aegir-2f for $999 which is compared below.

What the Wotan Is

The Wotan is a stereo power amplifier with the ability to output 200 watts into 2 channels at 8 ohms and 400 watts into 2 channels at 4 ohms. Core technology features include a dual-mono design, switchable feedback, intelligent temperature management, and Schiit Audio’s Forkbeard Control and Integration support. Let’s dig into the Wotan a little further.

Schiit Audio Wotan Power Amp Rear View

Dual Mono

The Wotan incorporates two separate 600VA transformers, that support a dual mono amplifier design with 160,000uf filter capacitance, 24 150W Toshiba output devices, and 7 internal power supply rails per channel.

Nexus Differential Topology, Switchable Feedback

Similar to Schiit Audio’s Tyr Monoblock power amp, the Wotan incorporates differential Nexus amplification. This Schiit Audio’s current-feedback balanced design supports the conversion of single-ended  (typically RCA) input signals to balanced (typically XLR) output signals.  In addition, switchable feedback allows users to furnish overall feedback on or off via front panel control or through the Forkbeard app (more than below).

Forkbeard

To make operation even easier, Schiit Audio has made the Wotan compatible with its Forkbeard control system. Forkbeard provides power output readings and system health stats including temperature and current. You can also switch allows you to switch feedback, change inputs, and trigger Standby mode remotely.  The Wotan comes with a Bluetooth Remote and but one needs to use the iOS app to control the Forkbeard control system.

Pro Tip: The Forkbeard control system supports iOS devices and is expected to be released near the end of November 2024. An Android app version is still forthcoming.

Schiit Audio Forkbeard System

Intelligent Silent Operation

The Wotan incorporates internal sensors that monitor current, temperature, DC, and other operational parameters. A 32-bit microprocessor manages and protects the amp in case of any fault. Wotan also provides two fans. Normally the fans stay off which saves electricity, but activate when temperatures climb. The fans switch on—slow at first, then build to full speed if needed. This strategy limits fan noise when listening to music.

The Bottom Line

There is something to be said about offering affordable high-end components that are made domestically and offer such a high level of performance — Schiit has proven to be unique in that regard.

The Wotan power amplifier is designed to deliver the power for any two-channel system but also incorporates innovative and practical supporting technologies to make sure the power output is clean and also supports easy control and integration with other components with Forkbeard.

As mentioned previously, Schiit Audio also offers a lower-priced two-channel power amp, the Aegir-2f for $999.  However, the Wotan is also optimized to be a part of Schiit Audio’s new $4,247 Gigastack system which consists of the Wotan power amp, Gungnir 2 DAC, and the solid-state Kara F or Tube-based Freya F preamps.

The article states “The Wotan comes with a Forkbeard-enabled Bluetooth Remote…” which is incorrect. The only remote that can control Wotan is an iOS device running the Forkbeard app.

I have a Vidar 1 that is driving my Buchardt S400 mk2’s. Reasonable happy with them though need to crank up on my Schiit Freya S to well past 12:00 to get moderate levels (65-75 db). A friend has the Aegir so we decided to switch temporarily. Wasn’t sure it would even drive my speakers but to my surprise they did, and well. Pretty much everything was better and reminded me of why I enjoy class A amps. Only issue was I needed to turn up volume even more and think I probably would have triggered protection if I turned them up more (which I did not. Not my amp).
My question is should I get Aeger 2 which has a little more power and probably will be fine for 95% of listen to and maybe get second one down the road (though Schiit warns against running mono with speakers that drop below 4ohms which mine do… or get a Wotan which has a ton of power and runs in class A up to 30 Watts. Or wait and see if Schiit will upgrade integrated amps which I think they may do soon?
    Thanks for any insights.

      John,

I’ve owned the Ragnarok 2 for a few years and love it. I’ve used it successfully with the Magnepan LRS and was advised to not go down the Vidar or Aegir mono block road with them because they wouldn’t behave nicely when the Maggies drop below 4 ohms. I was told there was no benefit at all using two of either one.

How large is your room and listening levels?

My room is large,500 square feet, but partially partitioned off to about 200 square feet. I have a SVS SB 2000 Pro sub and I need to keep the gain high on it too. I listen at moderate levels 60-75 db. I am surprised how high I need to turn up my Vidar to achieve this as it it rated at 200 watts into 4 ohms.

          John,

What is your listening position and does the room have high ceilings or is it more like an open-concept where sound is filling the entire space? 200 watts into 4 ohms with the Buchardt should be enough to fill a decent sized room.

Hey – have you heard the wotan to compare to the rag?

Standard listening position. Speaker not close to any walls. Front baffles about 7.5 feet from listens position.
9 foot ceilings concrete slab floor. But room is petty damped, not lively, so I think that is what sucks the watts away. Will take another look at the Ragnarok. It has received a lot of praise and eliminating a box would be nice too.

The Wotan Damping Factor values here differ from Schiit product specs. These are considerably higher. Lower Damping published on their site are causing me hesitation. Probably shouldn’t worry given my mostly modest listening levels.

      John,

My info came directly from Schiit – so that might reflect a change on their end.
