Following up on our report in March 2024 where we outlined Samsung’s 2024 TV line-up known at the time (including pricing), the world’s largest TV maker has followed up with an announcement that it is expanding its 4K QD-OLED and OLED TV offerings with a new model series and several new screen sizes.

Editorial Comment: When confronted as to which TV models are incorporating WOLED panels Samsung provided the following non-response:

Samsung OLED TVs consistently offer a premium experience while delivering excellent viewing performance powered by our NQ4 AI Gen2AI processor, regardless of the specific panels that are integrated into the product.

Apparently, Samsung wants to conceal which OLED technology is used, but we’re not sure how that helps buyers. As a result, I have provided my determinations as to which models use which panel technology based on my experience how Samsung acquires OLED panels from LG Display (QD-OLED panels are made by Samsung Display).

Tip: Currently QD-OLED TVs rank the best in terms of picture quality, but are also the most expensive.

S85D Series (New)

To start, Samsung has announced a new-entry-level OLED TV series, the S85D. This series utilizes WOLED panels and not the QD-OLED panels used in the S95 and most of the S90 series TVs.

The new S85D series comes in 55, 65, and 75-inch screen sizes and incorporates the same advanced NQ4 AI Gen2 Processor, 4K AI Upscaling capabilities, and Pantone Validated Colors found across the Samsung OLED TV lineup.

The S85D models also provide the full suite of Samsung’s features such as Dolby Atmos Sound for immersive audio, Samsung TV Plus with access to hundreds of channels, Samsung Gaming Hub for streaming games without a console, and more.

The S85D also features Motion Xcelerator Technology (120Hz) along with a bold look and feel, with a unique contour design.

Tech Note: The S85D TV models incorporate WOLED panels.

S90D Series (New 42 and 48-inch Screen Sizes Added)

The S90D expanded sizes are ideal for gamers with their Motion Xcelerator Turbo+ (144Hz) to help eliminate lag alongside OLED HDR+ that delivers powerful brightness and rich contrast.

Tech Note: The S90D 55, 65, and 77-inch models use QD-OLED panels, while the 42, 48, and 83-inches use WOLED Panels.

S95D Series (Top-of-the line)

Samsung S95D QD-OLED TV Front View

Announced earlier this year at CES 2024, the S95D series are Samsung’s top-of-the-line models. Combining Quantum dot and OLED technology, the S95D 4K TVs use individually self-lit pixels to eliminate the need for LED backlighting and an LCD Display layer, increasing brightness and color accuracy

This TV line provides wide contrast, vibrant color, and high-brightness display output.

The S95D is the first OLED (QD-OLED) TV with OLED Glare Free technology. This provides the best possible viewing experience across both bright and dark rooms. It has no negative effects on your viewing angle or contrast, and no color distortion.

Tech Note: To support an optimally smooth gaming experience, the S95D incorporates a 4K 144Hz panel.

At under 11mm, the S95D is also extremely thin. It features a flat-back design with an attachable One Connect Box that complements any space, making high-end architectural installations easy.

The S95D series is also designed to deliver great sound. Object Tracking Sound leverages the TV’s built-in multi-channel speakers to provide a fully immersive soundstage. With enhancements to its built-in speaker distribution on the side, bottom, and top of the TV, viewers can experience Dolby Atmos.
