LSI Logic Enables DivX Encoding for DVD Recorders With DoMiNo 8603 Single-chip Processor

• LSI Logic’s new DiMeNsion-3 solution enables one of the industry’s first DivX encoding solutions on the DMN-8603 DVD recorder processor
• Enables record/playback of up to 12 hours on a single DVD disc

LSI Logic Corporation and DivXNetworks, Inc. today announced that LSI Logic’s third-generation DoMiNo 8603 (DMN-8603), will be one of the first DivX Certified single-chip DVD recorder system processors to enable DivX encoding and playback. DivX encoding enables up to 12 hours record time on a single DVD disc and is one of the new features expected to help drive the high-growth DVD recorder market. Announced today, the DMN-8603 is part of the new DiMeNsion-3 solution that will be demonstrated this week in the Central Hall, booth #14938 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

“LSI Logic has established a strong position in the DVD recorder market, and their early adoption of DivX encoding technology will provide significant value to OEMs looking to implement a full-featured, high-performance DVD recorder solution that enables consumers to create and playback DivX video,” said Bill Holmes, director of product management, Consumer Electronics at DivXNetworks, Inc. “Additionally, consumers will benefit from the increased recording capacity enabled by DivX Certifed encoding solutions.”

Representing a breakthrough in DVD recorder features, the DMN-8603 integrates a wide variety of technologies and features, including DivX encoding and playback, SACD and DVD-Audio, SD-to-HD upconversion, HD-JPEG, YesDVD, Direct Digital Dub technology, and DoMiNoFX proprietary pre- and post-processing technologies.

“LSI Logic is pleased to have one of the first DivX encoding capabilities on a single-chip DVD recorder processor, further validating our leadership in this rapidly growing market,” said James Fox, director of DVD product marketing, LSI Logic’s Consumer Products Division. “DivX is among the world’s most popular video compression technologies with over 160 million users worldwide, so we’re pleased to support this feature in the evolving digital home.”

DivX video technology includes a complete Digital Rights Management (DRM) system, enabling new business models such as video-on-demand for content providers, consumer electronics companies and retailers. Only DivX Certified consumer electronics products have the capability to play rented and purchased DivX video content. The DivX Certified Partner Program was created to enable the development of official DivX-enabled consumer electronics products to meet the global demand for high-quality DivX convergence devices.

LSI Logic’s Consumer Products Division provides innovative digital media processing and silicon solutions to industry-leading, worldwide consumer electronics manufacturers. With a complete line of cutting-edge products for DVD, DVR, EVD, video game, digital TV, HDTV, set-top box, and professional video production/broadcasting devices, LSI Logic delivers entertainment into and throughout the Digital Home.
