To the Muon: KEF Mu3 True Wireless Earphones

Acclaimed UK loudspeaker manufacturer KEF is extending the company’s product line into the in-ear headphone space with a new entrant. Today the company announced the KEF Mu3 True Wireless earphones with built-in active noise cancellation (ANC) for $229.

The KEF Mu3 earphones were designed in collaboration with Ross Lovegrove, the designer behind the MUON loudspeaker and the MUO Bluetooth speaker, who’s renowned for his innovative approach and flowing, sculptural forms. With each subsequent product by Lovegrove, the company has dropped a letter. In that vein, it seems that the Mu3 follows suit and adds a three to signify the third product in collaboration with Lovegrove. What’s better for potential customers is the Mu3 is nearly 1/1000 the price of the flagship MUON loudspeaker.

KEF claims the Mu3 deliver the signature sound the company is known for. KEF describes the sound as, “exceptionally dynamic and well balanced, coherent sound with rich midrange, detailed bass and crisp high tones.”

Each earphone contains an 8.2mm full-range dynamic driver, expertly tuned by KEF’s UK engineering team. Bluetooth 5.0 handles the wireless duties, and audio performance is further enhanced by the introduction of simultaneous transmission. That’s where both earphones receive a signal at the same time, rather than the more common approach where audio is sent to one earpiece and relayed to the other and therefore running the risk of latency.

KEF’s Mu3 earphones include specially tuned Active Noise Cancellation technology that claims to eliminate external noise without affecting the details of the music. Alternatively, Ambient Mode disengages ANC and use the microphones to amplify sounds around you. This is a both a safety feature and a quick way to hear the world around you when you need it.

KEF built the Mu3 earbuds with ergonomics and comfort in mind. Each earbud is said to be perfectly balanced in the ears by smart weighting, which stops them from falling out. They are available with a choice of four subtly different sized ear tips to ensure a tight seal for noise isolation and a secure fit. With rugged IPX5 splash-proof protection Mu3 should withstand the elements, and if they fit as good as they say, could be good for workouts.

The KEF Mu3 have high-capacity, quick-charge batteries that return one hour of use time after just 5 minutes charging. On a full charge, KEF says they’ll last up to 9 hours.
