Advanced brightness and contrast capabilities of the Supernova screen extends use of projection systems to multi-purpose environments

CEDIA, DENVER, CO, Sept. 14, 2006 — dnp, a specialist in the design and manufacture of projection screens for the Home Theater and commercial markets, showcases their Award-winning optical front projection screen Supernova during CEDIA Expo 2006 in Denver.

Based in Denmark, dnp is the world’s leading supplier of optical screen technology. The Supernova screen, which won the Best Buzz award at the InfoComm show in 2005 and 2006 as well as this years prestigious International CES Innovations Award, enables projected images to be seen clearly and vividly, maintaining color saturation and fine details even in environments with high ambient light. The screen is capable of delivering an extraordinary image that’s twice as bright and with contrast that’s ten times greater than most screens.

“dnp’s mission is to deliver the perfect projection experience. And so far this has only been possible with optical rear projection”, says Henrik Mikkelsen, dnp Sales Manager for North America. “With the Supernova screen we have found a way to apply our optical technologies to a front projection screen, which opens up vast new opportunities for display solutions in brightly-lit residential environments, especially homes with lots of windows or multi-purpose recreation rooms.”

Combining the best of both worlds the dnp Supernova screen provides the superior image quality of optical rear projection with front screens’ minimal space requirements and ease of installation. Traditionally associated with dark rooms, curtains and window blinds, the standard front screen often results in eyestrain and audience fatigue. However, the Supernova screen sets new standards for front screens with maximum effect in high ambient light conditions common to modern homes.

The dnp Supernova screen incorporates advanced brightness and contrast enhancing technology. When the image is projected onto the screen it passes through an optical lens system, which focuses and concentrates the projected light before it is reflected back towards the viewers. The lens system comprises a patent pending contrast enhancement filter that absorbs incident light from windows and room lighting. As a result, the screen is highly resistant to ambient light.

The Supernova screen provides a typical contrast ratio of 20:1 — in other words ten times higher than the typical front screens contrast levels. The black coating on the contrast filter covers 60% of the screen surface, giving the screen a sleek and extraordinary appearance in repose. With a peak gain of 2.0 the screen is twice as bright as a standard front screen.

The screen is available in sizes up to 120″ in a 16:9 wide screen format and 100″ in 4:3 format. It features an ultra-fine pitch of 65 microns, which provides a vertical resolution of 20,000 lines (for a 100″ screen in 4:3 format) — and infinite horizontal resolution. It is compatible with all standard projectors, and can be installed like a conventional front screen with the projector mounted on the ceiling or placed on the table. To maximize the effect of the optical high-contrast filter, dnp recommends a projector throw of minimum 1.8:1.

The Supernova screen is currently available through authorized dnp dealers. Price starts at $879 and varies depending on screen size. The Supernova can be seen in dnp denmarks’s booth # 2712 at the Colorado Convention Center during CEDIA Expo 2006.
