I have also been waiting patiently for the new Sammy hlp5674w to come out and was concened to see that this "new" model has the old 6 segment color wheel. After reviewing the confusion here, I decided to call Sammy Customer Service. The young lady I spoke with indicated that she had just recieved a technical bulletin on this today. Apparently, Sammy has some "old" hlp5674w that were manufactured for the original release date of May 2004 that they are selling first! These DO have the 6 segment color wheel! However, all hlp5674w units manufactured now have the new 7 segment color wheel! I then asked if there would be a way to distinguish between the two models. The CS rep said she didn't know and suggested I have the salesperson check the manufacture date from the serial number. She said the 6CW and 7CW models would have the SAME hlp5674w model number on the unit! I suggested that she may wish to remind Sammy management that practice was VERY deceptive marketing, especially when she suggested that they intend to upgrade the specs on their web site. Of course, I have NO idea how much actual truth there is in all of this, but I did conclude my phone call with the Sammy rep by suggesting that this was really a case of "BUYER BEWARE", and she said "I guess so"! Its a little hard to believe that a good company like Samsung would shoot themselves in the foot like this.

Thank you Anonymous. Very interesting info. I was on the verge of buying 4674w before Xmas but I may think twice about it. Anybody else heard similar info from another source?

On the 6 segment color wheel I too was bumbed when I saw it on Samsungs website for the xx74 series. I emailed them and just got a reply yesterday. I was told the picture quality was 'virtually' equal to the xx85 series. OK, Big Red Flag on that one. I have the feeling that the first xx74 models out will have the 6 segment wheel and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. I am waiting for the 7 segment wheel and 2500:1 ratios like those of the Cpt Kirk xx85 models.

Hello! Have a quick question about the 5085 PIP function.

Currently it only picks up the current channel in the PIP, all other channels do not display so the set up must not be correct.

Had read that this TV has two tuners so an external source is not needed to display other channels but maybe it was not read correctly.

The rest of the TV works great and the picture on the available HD channels is awesome, the analog channels are fine, not as bad as some reviews indicated, not as clear as the HD channels but hopefully that will change if broadcasts comply with the HD goal in the next couple of years.

Would appreciate any recommendations or help with the PIP function.

Thanks!

bigjagr,
Yes the TV has two tuners, but you need to split your signal so that two signals are going into your set.

I called Sammy again today with another question on the HLP5674W and, since I had another sales rep on the phone, decided to ask again about the reason for the 6 segment color wheel. Two days ago they had told me that they were now using the 7 segment wheel in newly manufactured HLP5674W's. However, today I got the story that Sammy decided to use the 6 segment wheel because the upgraded DNIe chip used in the HLP5674W did not "work well" with the 7 segment wheel. I'm sure tomorrow they'll have a new story. At least their "creative"! ;-)

bigjagr, if your set has twin tuners pip then when you push the pip function then it should let you have the second channel with just one cable coming into the cable input. no splitter should be needed. i have two different sources coming to both antenna inputs and pip works with both. you are on cable or ota? dtv. is different story.

bigjagr, got to thinking last night and if you are using a set top box then what strati said will be true. i'm just running direct cable from wall to ant input. analog ch's are all that will pip i think.

Hi Folks, I rcv'd my HLP5674W from ABT Electronics on Wed.evening 11/24 and have had the whole 4 day weekend to play with it and yes, to go to BEST BUY and compare it's picture to the HLP5085 that they have on the floor. I have to say that I really can't see any appreciable difference in picture quality! I couldn't be more pleased. Like many of you, I've been researching and comparing the various brands and models of RPHDTV setsand monitors for the past 2 years and was on the verge of switching totally from the Samsung DLP back to my originally interest, the Sony LCD - out of pure frustration. I am extreamly pleased that I waited for the HLP5674W. While it displays a great picture using HD and DVD inputs (which is to be expected)I was surprised by how well the set displays pre-recorded VHS tapes! It's built in "line doubling" really improves the picture on these lesser quality signals. It also does a VERY acceptable job processing and displaying my SD definition Dish Network programs. All in all I am truly happy that I waited for this TV and didn't compromise with a less quality unit!

I called Samsung today and here is what I found out.

The tech's have been briefed with a tech note and the published contrast ratio's for the x85 and the x74 are incorrect. The x74's will have a 2500:1. The x85's are actually only delivering 2000:1.

He didn't have any informaiton on the 6 vs 7 color wheel other than the switch was done to improve picture quality and TV performance. We thought (and was suggested by someone else here) that with 6 colors, the video processing looses a level of complexity and thus the processing delays which caused the gaming delays and lip-sync issues may be lessened without hurting PQ.

If anyone else has more to offer, I'd love to hear it.

I appreciate all the info that is available on this site. I am interested in the move Samsung is making toward 1080p resolution. Does anyone know if the 1080p will be available in the 50 inch range? I don't think I want to go any bigger than 56 inches with my next set.

Also, is there anything out there that is considered a true 1080p source? Or will the TV upconvert to get the 1080p resolution?
My Bro-in-law has a 2003 model DLP sammy (I think it is 42 or 43 in.), and there is sometimes a difference in the audio and video syncronizing. Can anyone tell me if that is fixed in the newer sets? Or is there a way to change your settings so that doesn't happen?

do you have any game consoles? Xbox, PS2, etc? If so, would you please play on your new set and let us know if you get delay in the picture in fast pased games or games that require timing (baseball swing, driving car, etc.)

Also, have you noticed any lip-sync issues?

Thanks

I have lived with my 4674 since the 19th of Nov and have these observations. No clay face in evidence yet, Rainbows are fleeting and mostly when watching SD programs, small lip sync issues with SD only, possibly attributed to BrightHouse (real oxymoron!) cable. I recently installed Panasonic DVD recorder before the STB and when watching analog through it rather than the STB (Pace 550P HD box)the PQ is noticeably better and the lip sync issues seem to be gone. I wonder if these issues are sometimes a STB issue rather than the TV itself. The new color control features which are upgrades from the HLN series are much more flexible as well, as is the internal mute.

I swear some of these posts must be from Samsung reps... not to bag on Samsung as I love my 5085, but if this site is accurate I can't believe what they are trying to push with the 74 series. I've been watching for news on the 74 series, as my father had a entertainment center built specifically for the HLN5065 TV. I talked him into waiting for the 74 series (I guess he'd have to settle for 46 inch), but now I can't recommend this either. As with the 63 series, looks like Samsung is all about 'cheap manufacturing' and 'profit' vs. using the latest technology, and their competitors will ultimately gain ground by using better technology even though they are new to DLP production.

Wondered if there are any other actual 5085 owners out there. Love the TV, but had a problem early on with dark colors looking metallic and fake. I had always assumed this was due to the 'dark green' segment not being processed correctly, but I was wrong. I fixed it by moving 'Gamma' from 2 to 10 in the maintenance menu. I swear that now all scenes, light or dark, fast or slow, flesh, forest, outdoors, or explosions, look perfect and better than any TV I've ever seen. One of my favorite aspects are its capability for extreme brights in light sources, explosions, etc., and I know this effect would never last on a Plasma TV (as plasmas slowly lose their brightness). So I highly recommend playing with the Gamma setting on your 5085. There is also a 'sound delay' that may have to do with lip synch. Mine is set to "1" and I don't have any lip synch issues, but haven't played around with it enough to know what it really does. Maybe an option if anyone has a 5085 lip synch problem (I don't run sound through the TV and this may have something to do with it). Hundreds of options and I only really played with Gamma. Reply if you need instructions on how to do this. Too bad Sammy appears to be going south as the 5085 may be the pinnacle of their accomplishments.

Question for HLP-4463W.

Anyone knows how to check the lamp hours on the HLP-4663W or any Samsung DLP Series. I'm just curious and want to check my lamp usage hours. Thanks.

I called Samsung yet again late in the day and got another rep and another set of answers.

I think we all have to accept that due to our research and sharing, we know more than they do at this point.

My previous post regarding contrast ratio's was switched back ... x85 2500:1, x74 2000:1.

I asked him ....

1) why there was no light engine listed on the "family brochure" for the x74?

2) on the family brochure, there is a section where they state why the 7 color wheel is much better ..but are now saying the 6 color is fine. Which is it?

3) are they moving this line to the 7 color wheel in current production.

4) have they made any inprovements to the processing engine to help with gaming/lip-sync issues?

He really got into the questions ("hey, those are good questions ... I'd want to know that too") and to his credit has forwarded the "file" to the product specialist.

I will report back what I find .. though at this point .. I'm now leaning toward a JVC D-ILA (see that thread for latest report).

Hopefully, I'll hear back from Samsung tomorrow.

dblackford,

I'm a proud owner of a 5685 unit, and I was wondering how do you adjust the "gamma" and the "sound delay" on these sets?

I got the HLP4674W from Tweeter about a week ago and got the HD/DVR Moxi tuner yesterday from Charter. It's hooked up through the component connections. I haven't tried the DVI input yet, but so far, I am very pleased. I have not noticed any lip sync or rainbow problems. This TV is installed over a fireplace in a built in cubby hole. The dimensions were such that this model fits perfectly. No other TV of this size even came close to fitting. Only issue that I've seen is viewing angle. This TV is higher than I would normally put it if I didn't have the built in and it loses some brightness when viewed from below horizontal eye level. I eased the problem by tilting the TV about an inch and moving the sofa back about a foot. I'm very impressed with how it displays the high def channels. I wish there were more available. I haven't had time to really play with the settings yet, it is pretty much what's set out of the box. I'm also equally impressed with the Moxi HD/DVR unit.

Great board; excellent info. I, too have been waiting to take the HDTV plunge and will do so very shortly due to my trusty 27" Panasonic "Superflat" unit (1992) being relegated to beach house duty. Anyway, I have been keen on the Samsung DLPs for at least a year (first the 43" and now the 46") and I've been dialed-in to all of the technology for quite some time (a gadget/tech head). The Samsung 40-inch model fits the bill because it is very compact (width-wise) and neatly addresses my space constraints (the low-mounted speaker configuration helps).

So, the question is... HLP4663W or HLP4674W? I've read everything about the color wheels, the contrast ratio, HD2+/HD3, etc. and I'm close to pulling the trigger. I have plenty of cash but there's no need to throw the stuff away. I've seen the 4663 for around $2500 +/-. It sounds like the 4674 is at least $3200-$3500. I am not a super-picky hair-splitter when it comes to some of the intangibles -- I just want the thing to function without too much trouble (basically, I work and my family are the ones who watch TV!). So, from a reliability/hassle standpoint (based on some of the xx63 horror-story threads) is there a consensus that the 4674, although more expensive, might be the better bet overall? Or, should I save $700+ and go with the 4663? For $700, I'd think you could start to make a dent in terms of an HDTV Tuner and DVD player (any recommendations?). Yes, I'll be signing-up for Comcast HD.

Hello! Thanks Strati and tnbubba for the PIP help.

Have a Comcast HD set top box and one cable coming in from the wall. The question is where does the split need to be positioned and then where do the outputs from the splitter connect.

Have an AV receiver, a DVD and also a CD player connected. The wall cable goes to the HD set top box then a cable goes from there to the DVD or the TV, would have to pull out the TV from the shelves to get a better look.

Yes, found the TR85 component shelves from special order at Circuit City, 399 plus tax, no shipping charge.

Looks real nice under the TV and hides the wires nicely in the wire management box the the shelf unit contains.

Hopefully somebody can indicate the best position for the splitter so the PIP works since the 5085 does have two tuners.

The instruction manual does not say anything about needing a splitter to get the PIP to work.

Very much appreciate any help!

bigjagr, Perhaps tnbubba can better answer that question. Sorry, I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. I have a relative of mine you has set it up that way. I know Mr. Lynch (AKA "JVC Man") is quite knowledgeable and I think I have read he has split his cable as well. Perhaps Mr. Lynch can give us both some guidance!
I am look at purchasing the HLP5685 in about two weeks so I have downloaded their PDF manual. If you look on page 9 it states "The PIP channel can be received only when a signal source is connected to ANT 1 IN".
The shelves (TR85) are not available yet in Toronto. Are theses shelves a good compliment to this TV in your opinion? Is the box really large? I'm asking as I might have to order it from the US. If I have to pay $150 shipping for a huge box, I don't think it would be worth it.

To all users with PIP problems. Split cable signal between wall outlet and the cable box. Digital cable boxes are really like video servers, especially where video on demand is involved. Certain loop through arrangements will compromise the cable box to host link, leading to eventual loss of some services. So split the cable coming out of the wall and hook one side of the split to the cable box and the other to ant 1 on the TV set.

An aside to everyone concerned about the 4674s and 6 segment wheel. My friend has the 5063 and has a definitely inferior Pq to my 4674. He also has had the blinking light syndrome and I also notice more rainbow effect on his set. Yesterday mine recovered nicely from a power drop out which can be quite common these days in FL.

Hello! Thanks Strati and klaus for the help.

Will try the splitter set up in the next day or two. Concerning the TR85, it is a nice feature to have with the 5085 and fits very nice.

The box is about 2 feet wide by about 5 feet long and weighs maybe 40 pounds, most of it from the glass shelves to place your components.

Has to be a Circuit City in Buffalo, maybe you can get it from there if that is not too far to save the shipping cost.

Will send you a picture of the set up if you specify your e-mail or would add an attachment here but cannot find any attachment link.

Have something going into the TV already but not sure if it is ant 1 that is an out from the box, not at home now so will check tonight.

Very much appreciate the help.

Thanks!

Hello- Thinking hard about upgrading my 5 yr old Toshiba Rear Proj HD for a HL-P6163W. Can anyone tell me or speculate about a replacment coming soon for this model? I see the 56 in is a 74 series, but not the 61 Inch. Thanks

I have the 5685 and I'm using the pip function by way of my vcr, which is also connected to my HD cable box through the ant 1 input.I don't even use the pip mode unless I'm changing the channels while watching another media source, like watching dvd move, etc. I would only use the pip function if you want to get rid of wife in the living room. This really annoys her, lol. As far as the TR85 is concern, it would make a great addition to the 5685 unit, which I will be purchasing soon.

bigjagr, Thanks for the TR85 info. I called CC in Buffalo and they said CC doesn't ship to Canada. Bummer!
Amazon has it for $349 and for some stupid reason they won't ship this outside the US eather?! I have bought a ton of stuff from them. This is a first.
I'll eather find some independant to ship it over or at worst case scenario, it's a 1 hour drive to Buffalo (saves me $100 in shipping)
By the way, the stand is 70 pounds!
Yes, I would very much appreciate it if you can email some pics of your setup. eworld@eddinfo.com
Thank you!

Hello! Have put in the splitter and the PIP works now.

The only issue is that Swap does not work if you are using DVI, Component1 or 2, and maybe a few more.

Currently using DVI, but can do a manual swap which just takes a couple extra steps instead of using the remote, can swap the sound from the menu only and not from the remote and cannot swap the picture with DVI as mentioned previously.

Possibly there is a better workaround but this is working now.

Chopper, the PIP is great for checking out 2 NFL games at once or even some hoops.

Will probably send out some pictures tomorrow afternoon, possibly tonight but the pictures will look better if take them in the daylight tomorrow.

The box did not feel like 70 pounds when carrying it but maybe it was. The stand basically wraps around the TV from the back and you have to wiggle the TV out some if you want to change some cables around but other than that it is a lot cleaner.

Make sure your cables are 1 or 2 meters or less or you will have some extra slack that might be hard to hide if you have too much.

The length depends on where your components are located on the shelves, 2 left and 2 right, but the wire management box has 2 holes on the left and 2 on the right for passing wires and also some of those plastics clips in the box to keep the slack bundled up nicely.

Hope this helps and will get those pictures out tomorrow at the latest.

Thanks!

bigjagr, That's great! Thanks for your detailed description of the stand. I've purchased nice cables, all ranging from 1-2 Meters.
I purchased the stand today $399 + $80 shipping. I could have saved the $80 driving to Buffalo but I would loose 5x that amount in unproductive time in my business.
By the way, my mistake...it's 75 pounds!
I look forward to seeing your pictures!

Hi-End front projectors use 3 chips no color wheel. You would think a Hi-End TV like the Mits or Sammy would give us a quality set.

What's your point?

If you have the big bucks you wouldn't be looking at a rear projection TV.

As you stated above, you would be in the market for a "High End Front Projector"

Hello Strati and Chopper! Went and created a quick web page with a bunch of TR85 and HLP5085W pictures.

This was easier then just trying to send a few pictures and making sure it reached the space limit since some providers do not allow attachements to be larger than 4 MB, plus from the thumbnails on the home page all angles can be viewed, then click on one to make it larger.

Like the page indicates, still need to shorten a few cables and lengthen one more to get the fully clean look but it looks better than it did before the shelves were put in place.

Here is the link for the page.

http://www.bbwebfeats.com/hlp5085/newdlp.html

Hope this makes your purchase decision easier and also anybody else on the forum that needs a look.

The picture is awesome on HD, analog is fine, only issue is that you cannot remote swap PIP with DVI input but can swap manually as stated previously.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

At Samsung's website, the P4663W is listed as "Gen 3 HD Third" and P4674W is listed as "HD2 Plus Optical Engine". I have seen the HD2 refered as second generation on other newsgroups.

Can someone confirm that the 4674 actually is the latest model?

bigjagr,

Great job on the pictures. It's funny how you have the center speaker on the floor, because that's exactly how I have mine set up for the time being. I haven't found the stand that will compliment the 5685, but I'm still looking.

Can you do me a favor and see if my receiver will fit on one of the shelves?

My receiver measures W: 17 1/4" X H: 7" X D:17" and weighs 60 lbs. Will the stand support 60 lbs?

Thanks.

JKIM The hd2+ chip is the updated version of the HD2. It is the better chip compared to the HD3 used in the 63 series set. The contrast is higher in the 74 series though not as high as the 85 series due to the lack of the 7 segment color wheel in the 74 series. The 74 series is the Tantus version sort of like Sony's XBR. The 46 " version fits in many armoires that the 4663 is a bit too wide for. I have the 4674 and am very pleased. I had a HLN437n for a few weeks and returned it due to all the issues on other threads. I replaced it with an LG 42" ED plasma which was just horrible on SD channels, and only so-so on HD. The nice thing about the 4674 is that there is a shelf on top for a center channel speaker.

Hello Chopper! Very glad the pictures were a help.

Here is a link for the shelves from a site, it has the dimensions but not how many pounds it will hold. Looks like your receiver will fit on one of the bottom shelves now.

http://www.1-888camcorders.com/tr85.html#

Have a Yamaha HTR5790 receiver here and will try to find out how much it weighs.

Must be at least 40 or 50 but will try and check.

Thanks!

Hello Chopper! The weight for the HTR5790 is 33 pounds.

Not sure what the shelves support but it has to be at least 50 and probably more. The shelves are actually made by Ameriwood Industries and AWDTR85 is the product code.

May have some information on their web site, have not looked if they have a site but they must.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

User Report and tips on Samsung HLP5674W: TERRIFIC!

I got my new 5674 on Nov. 30, five days ago, and I love everything about it. I bought it from TVAuthority.com. I preordered it months ago. They came through and I highly recommend them. Setup was cinch, with a few tweaks I'll talk about in a minute.

The picture, sound and ability to adjust everything is all terrific and exceeded my expectations. I especially appreciate all the input options. I used the Avia calibration DVD, but the factory settings seemed appropriate.

Here are a few suggestions. Once you get a high def TV, you need a high def signal, dah. I think the only way to go is with DirecTV satelite with their High definition Tivo DVR (HR10-250). I have to have my Tivo and the only way to get high def Tivo is with this unit. Dish Network and the Cable company DVR's use other technology than Tivo. The reason you need the Tivo version is to add recording space. With the Tivo unit you can add a second hard drive. I bought a 300GB extra hard drive from 9thtee.com for $329 (same price with a little different design also available from Weaknees.com). So now I can record up to 70 hours of high def TV or movies including the Dolby Digital Surround Sound or 470 hours of regular TV. This is better than renting DVDs. The original Tivo can record 30 hours of high def (200 hours of regular TV). The Dish or Cable company boxes usually record only 20 hours of high def. The Tivo HD DVR is $1,000, but if you go high def, it's a must have. You also get 6-months of high def service and 3-months of HBO, Showtime and Cinemax with DirecTV now, plus free professional installation.

Next issue is the DVD player, which I'm finding I don't use too much anymore, because I have so many high def movies on Tivo I don't have time for DVD's. I upgraded anyway to the Denon DVD-3910 because I wanted the digital output. It's a terrific unit with HDMI, DVI-D, coax, optical and 6-channel analog audio outputs. I use the coax for the audio because I hear it is slightly better than optical.

Here's a trick if you use equipment similar to mine. If you have the Tivo set to record Dolby Digital (and you definitely should) instead of standard stereo, then the audio does not output through the HDMI cable. Normally HDMI is audio and video and DVI-D is video only. So the correct setup is to use the HDMI to DVI-D cable (supplied with the Tivo DVR) from the Tivo to the TV. Then take the analog RCA Left/Right audio from the Tivo to the TV so that you can get regular audio when just watching regular Tivo shows. Use the Tivo optical connection to your audio receiver to get your surround sound going. Connect the DVD player with the HDMI to HDMI cable to the TV (that cable is also provided with the Tivo DVR). Then you get the same options when you play DVD's to use the TV's speakers and/or your surround system.

I also needed new cabinets for the stereo gear since the new TV is wider than my old 45" Mitsubishi. I used the TechCraft VR51X on each side and shortened a TechCraft QT-40X for the TV. TV stand is 10" narrower than the TV, so there is a 5" overhang on each side. No prob. It's hard to find a stand that matches the width of the 5674.

Bottom line: the HLP5674W was worth the wait. I love my TV. I love DirecTV. An I love my Tivo.

Hope you can find a 5674 in store soon to see for yourself.

Hi All,

I just bought the 5674 from Tweeter as my very first step into Hi Def and have to say....either I'm going blind or they dropped my set before delivering it.

I have nothing but ghosting and blurred images and overall poor picture quality. When I switch between video components, I get a "Searching for Signal" message for about 30-45 seconds, followed by a "No Signal" for another 10-15 seconds, then finally a picture appears on the screen (if you can call it that).

I get just as bad of a picture quality using a progressive scan DVD player as my old Sony 560D POS. I was blown away when the picture quality was just as grainy. I was really hoping for that pure video quality that progressive scan DVD players are supposed to produce.

I don't know if it's the kind of component cables I'm using, my choice of video equipment, or as I said in the beginning, the delivery guys dropped my TV prior to getting it into their truck. I've read and re-read every single manual to ensure that everything is set up to show optimal video quality.

I have to say that my move into the Digital TV world hasn't been all that great. Maybe I got a bad TV or something, but I'll have to use my trusty analog TV until Tweeter comes out to invesitgate. Hoping for a positive outcome.

bigjagr,
Wow! You've outdone yourself with the pictures above. They look great, Thank you! It gives me a much better understanding of where all my components will go and how everything will look.

I thought there were 3 shelves on either side. Am I mistake or did you only use two on eather side?

How many inches does the tv with the stand extend from the wall? ie. From the wall to the end of the pedestal's clear glass base?

Thanks again,

Strati

I bought a Samsung HLP6163W 3 weeks ago from Best Buy. Up until last night, I was very happy with it. Last night, the picture developed an intermittent flicker in brightness. It is almost as if the projection bulb was brightening and dimming at about 5 cycles per second. It would do this for a while, then stop. Then start again. It did it on all the different inputs whether interlaced or progressive so I do not think that it is the de-interlacing circuitry.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I need to decide quickly whether to return the set as the 30 day period will expire next week.

Thanks.

Hello Strati! Thanks and hope the pictures help.

The TR85 only has 4 shelves total, 2 on the right and 2 on the left.

The stand, the part with the wire management box is about 6 inches from the wall, the box is about 5 inches dep, then another 2 inches to the back of the pedestal. The back of the TV screen is about 12 inches from the wall and then pedestal is about another inch in from that.

Can probably reduce this by about 2 or 3 inches more once all the shorter cables are in place and everything is in the wire management box, the pedestal with the connections on the back is about 2 inches from the wire management box, could probably move this closer but need some clearance for the cable connections.

The back of the pedestal does give off some heat, a purple colored light shines off the wall, not sure if this is from the color wheel or what but it is not hot but a little warm. Possibly this is from the fan getting rid of the extra heat from the lamp.

Hopefully can get everything about 4 inches closer when all connections are in but this works for now.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

Hi bigjagr,

OK, 4 shelves in total. The TR85 stand on many sellers' websites looks like it's three shelves on eather side. That's why your pictures really helped.

I can't wait until HDMI cables are available on all equipment. This would cut down on cables big time. Or even better, true 100% wireless hometheatre without any loss in PQ or audio!

I know about the fan / heat behind the pedestal. I have crouched behind this TV in so many places to listen to the fan, as previous models, from what I read, sounded like turbines.

Thanks for your detailed measurements

I don't think it has a dedicated shelf but some centers might be able to fit. I originally had a hln4367 which has a similar case to the 4663 and my Cambridge Soundworks center fit pretty well.

Hi Jay-Dawg, I bought a 6163 two days ago. I had the same feeling as you had when I hooked it to the Cox cable (analog) and regular DVD player. What, $3800 for this poor picture.

On the 2nd day I went to Best Buy to purchase a LG 3510A (a HD receiver and up-sampling DVD). After I hook this baby in: I got about 6 channel free HD channel. Three of them are very good quality: 1. 1 of the 3 PBS has the best quality, 2. Monday night foodball on CBS is excellent. 3. NBC (Chanel 12 in Phoenix) is OK too.

The picture from DVD looks almost HD like.

I think I'm going to keep this setup.

Hope it helps.

BETRAYED BY SAMSUNG

Hi all, Back in late August when I got my HLP5085W, I was juiced. The picture I saw at BB was incredible. It looked great on digital movies like Star Wars. To receive an optimal picture I went so far as to buy a new HD841 DVD Player and get a Directv HD Tivo box. My current picture is awful. Everything has a Green Hue and dark scenes look like pastels from a Velvet Painting. Sickening. (I use more colorful words off forum) Last Friday I got a service call from the local Samsung service Co. I need a NEW Main Digital Board and a NEW DLP LIGHT ENGINE!!!!!!!! As if this was not bad enough I got an unrelated call from Samsung Saturday stating they inadvertantly left a Digital Line Filter(?) out of my set. I called Samsung requesting a replacement set and they are refusing to replace the unit and want to take it away for service. What a pile of S***. I am trying to get my BB Service plan to get the unit replaced. At that point I will get the option to choose something other than a Samsung. Nice going Samsung, you took a huge fan and made a bitter enemy. I have never felt so betrayed in my life with a purchase. I trusetd them, they took my money and then Scr**** me. Be ware.... Good Luck to all with your current and future sets. I hope this is an anomoly but I had to speak out. Happy Holidays.

I to am an owner of the 5685 and love the set. Got it from CC back in Sep after viewing this form for 3 months. Got a call yesterday on my voice mail from a company that does samy's work saying that I needed a digital line filter. Can any one give me some info about this, and why I need to have it installed? As far as I know of the TV works get no prob. will this new filter improve pq or just a waste of my day off waiting for the tec to show up.

Charles,

I am not sure what I will go to next. The Mitsubishi sets have a really nice picture but seem to have their share of problems as well. The LG sets are too new in my opinion and I don't trust DILA technology at this point. I am really upset over all of this. I thought I had found the "right" set but I was wrong on that one. The worst part is my wife had no problems with our 35" Mitsubishi CRT that this replaced. Now she has problems and they are both with the set and me. I will be out looking at new sets on Friday. That's the day BB is calling me with their decision on replacing my set. I hope they take the Samsung piece of S*** out of my home.

JAKE ,the set i am looking to replace is also a 35" mitsubishi. works fine but is about 15 years old and i have room for one of these larger sets.BUT after 2 years i still have not taken the plunge.right now it is the Toshiba DLP (carried by BB) that interests me the most but i am watching these forums first to see what problems it may have.it amazes me that for the price ,these sets are so plagued by problems.

I've visited almost every tv forum on the web, and I have to say that every tv set mentioned have their own share of problems, especially Sony to my surprise. Sony was my first choice, until I heard about their bulb and pixel problems. I have the 5685, and i have to say, it's one of the best looking set.
It's unfortunate that someone will receive a defective set, but thats why you have to invest in a warranty just incase something goes wrong. Samsung did not make great tv sets in the past, in fact the Samsung was not even on my list of sets I wanted to purchase. With the new Samsung sets like the HL-P5687 & HL-P5677 due out in March 2005, I'm sure Samsung will redeem themselves.

I've been reading these posts for months, leaning towards the Samsung all along. When the new '74's came out, I was looking forward to the dramatic improvement. But these new units seemed about the same. So instead I ended up buying the new Sony 55" (KDF-55WF655) LCD rear projection. It's one of the nicer looking sets, and the picture is perfect (except SD which is just ok). And it was a lot cheaper than the Samsung...it cost me $2800 with a $200 mail in rebate.

Ma xJ,

Thanks for the reply. I only wish I had the $$ to get that LG model (spent it all on the TV!)

Which brings me to my next point....can anyone post what type of progressive model DVD player they are using on their Sammy (sub $100) that they believe is creating a near-theater picture? as well as what cable you're using (component, dvi, hdmi --> wellll, maybe not hdmi for sub $150). Model number would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

Hello all,
Just a bit of info...
the HL-P5687 & HL-P5677 are going to be the same sets as the 5685 and 5674, with the exception that they will have HD tuners and cable card slots built into them. There has been no solid release date on them as of yet.
The 4674 and 5674 are out right now, however. Both are still typically very tight as far as inventory goes. Right now we are out of 4674's, but do still have 8 5674's in stock. If anyone has any technical questions, or would like any more information please feel free to e-mail me.

I actually do have a Samsung HLP5674W. I got it from Ultimate Electronics almost 3-weeks ago. It supposed to be their display model, but they sold it to me anyway.
I think the picture is great so far. Picture is not so sharp in 4:3 mode though.

And what exactly are you plugging that into and whats on top of the stand behind the TV, that little black box looking thing? Just curious. Send me an email if ya have some time man. Hello KevinG! That black box is the speaker selector box for the distributed audio system that was added while building the new home here.

Can listen to music in almost every room where speakers were added from the A/V receiver which has two zones as well.

Can listen to music in Zone2 while the TV is playing in Zone1, the speaker selector box is basically for the other rooms in the home in Zone2, the receiver and 5085 are in the family room which is the primary zone.

The coolest part is cranking up the music in the master bath in the mornings, each room in Zone2 that have speakers also has a volume control so rooms can be turned off if necessary.

The speaker box usually has all the Zone2 speakers on and just control the sound with the volume control but could also turn the speakers off too.

Would recommend structured wiring and a distributed audio system, especially during new construction as it is easier to wire it then.

The Zone2 also has two outdoor speakers with a volume control for the back patio too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

I just received my hlp5674w and I noticed that in analog mode the video seems to bloom on both sides of the screen. This is very noticeable when watching the news ticker on Fox news. Also when watching a football game the vertical grid lines tend to be curved. Can someone let me know if rhey have the same problems.

Anonymous,

I haven't noticed the things you speak of. The clarity could be better on analog. But I think this is true of most hdtvs especially when you sit 8 ft away like I do. I'm considering splitting my cable line and running one directly to the tv. I heard this might help but I'm not sure. If anyone else has any ideas about improving analog I'd love to hear them.

G Saunders:
I have an HLP4674w and I suspect that many of the problems with PQ arise from bad cable boxes. I notice that if I run analog cable through my Panasonic DVD recorder and then to the TV via component cables, that the analog picture is much more clear and voice sync issues that plague the analog channels virtually disappear even on the worst channels(typically NBC and offshoots)I have had a HLN 437, LG Plasma , and this new set exhibit the same behavior with the same cable hook up so it is set independent. I also see voice sync issues on my 20 inch analog bedroom set but it is harder to see due to smaller size faces with even less clarity. As a wise man once said"garbage in, garbage out!"

I solved the blooming problem by using the S-Video directly from the cable box rather than using the (High Quality) 75 ohm coax cable. It appears that the 5674w doesn't handle the analog signal very well.

Klaus, is it true that if you use the component cables then you wouldn't be able to stretch the picture to cover the entire screen (Panaromic view)?

I meant analog signal through the ANT input.

Klaus

twentyeightdays:
I run everything component through my Onkyo recever so the TV is a monitor only. I have the cable box set to "pass through" so there is no conversion. The cable box is also set to 4:3 so any analog signal can be run in panorama. I personally hate any of the artificial screen filling modes unless leterbox is being broadcast in which case I use zoom 1. Otherwise all 4:3 broadcasts are watched in that mode. That is the biggest reason that I liked DLP for no burnin issues. You might try a splitter on the cable coax, one into the cable box the other directly into the tv. Cable boxes sometimes strip out the digital signals and pass through only the analog, sometimes affecting the analog signal. I have had good luck with either the analog tuner in my panasonic dvd recorder, or directly tuning with the tv as a test only. The Pace HD box from Brighthouse cable is crap.

Finally, I ordered my Samsung HLP5685 yesterday.

Picked it up at BB for 27% off the listed price!

I never buy warranty on any electronics, but as everyone would undoubtedly agree, I bought a 5 Year In Home Service Plan. The warranty expires January 2010 !

There's two great reasons for me to feel great about my purchase. One, is knowing that I'm covered for the next five years and secondly is this great forum.

I would like to thank all the individuals that have made this board so successful!

Chopper:If you set your box to passthrough it will decode allof the formats that your tv is capable of. BTW I just returned my Pace STB for the new SA 8300HD DVr and the PQ is 10 times better on SD digital and analog. Analog looks like SD digital and digital is near DVD quality. I have the box set to pass through and let the TV handle the up/down conversion. I am wondering if this may be the source of poor PQ that many owners find. I am a much happier person after the replacement.

Klaus,

On my digital cable box, I have the following options:

Upconvert-1
Upconvert-2
Pass-Through
Fixed

Which is the better choice?

My cable box does not have a DVI output, so it's connected via component cables, if this helps. Thanks.

Chopper:
My box has a setup wizard which detects and stores allthe formats your tv can display. The instructions say to choose passthrough after that for best results. If you do not have the wizard, then I would experiment, probably using the analog and SD digital channels as a benchmark as to which setting looks best.

Chopper,

I got the HLP5685 delivered yesterday (1 day after placing the order)

I had my wife go out yesterday and surprised her with this!

Awesome! Better PQ than I have seen this Sammy in any big box store. The DVD quality is near HD quality. I have it hooked up to a Pioneer Elite, and Audioquest YIQ3 Component Cables ($300). The rest of my cables are all Monster Ultra (I get them at 50% off), including the Monster Power HTS 5000.

Playing IMAX DVDs is beyond stunning! We were so drawn to the images we didn't hear a thing!

The delivery guys were drooling! They were more exited than I was. They said they would take this over any Plasma.

I'm still waiting for the TR85 stand to arrive from NY. I'm in Toronto and the Samsung stand is not available here. The stand is almost a must. Women especially hate to see "All that wire stuff"!

Chopper, thanks for offering to help. I'll have some questions in the coming weeks.

Strati,

Purchasing the TR85 is a must if you want to hide the wires. My wife wants me to buy the TR85, because she can't stand the wires either. I'm in the process on clearing a large closet space area which has large folding doors (living room area),so I can hide the entire home theater setup. The TR85 would be ideal for this setup.

My wife bought a piece of furniture a few weeks ago, which was delivered yesterday. The delivery guys couldn't keep their eyes off my set because there was a movie playing in HD. They couldn't believe how great the HD picture looked. Good luck on your new set. BTW, my wife bought me the 5685 for xmas. Great wife.......

Up to today, my prospective purchase choice was for the Sammy HLP-5674. Now however, having seen Sony's
Grand WEGA 55" LCD Projection, Model KDF55XS955, my buying decision is less clear. I saw it next to a 5685 at BB and if there was a difference in PQ it seemed marginal. Of course I know PQ interpertation is a very subjective thing and have no doubt some of the concerns about the 5674 on this forum (i.e. color wheel and contrast ration specs) have had a negative influence on me. I confess I am not a videophile but as I suspect many of you may relate to, I am anxious to pull the trigger on a HD TV in the 55 inch screen size range.

I am aware this is a SAMMY list but would like and appreciate any objective opinions regarding comparison of the 5674 and the KDF55XS955, pros & cons.

Thanking all respondents in advance.

Sony will be phasing out their LCD Rear Projection sets starting in 2005 and adopting a 3 panel LCOS as well as a new chip https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-video/110771.html

Sony is not licenced to carry any of Texas Instruments' DLP Chips.

Sony's actions, as well as many other manufacturers, should speak volumes. There is no future in LCD RP. LCD YES DEFENITELY, but not LCD Rear Projection!

I've compared the Sony 60XS955 with the Samsung 5685 at Circuit City and found that the 5685 had a slight edge on the pq category. It seems to me that the DLP units produce a much better picture due to the fact that pixels are closer together than the LCD pixels. If you closely look at a HD feed on a LCD unit, you'll notice small gaps between the pixels. Because of this , the DLP units produce a smoother picture. The new Sony LCD sets do have a very attractive design, but lack the DLP advantage.

Ok...had the tech from Tweeter come out to check out my 5674. He said that the analog and digital boards (?) were bad, so he'll replace them both. He further said that the very first xx74s that came out had some bad boards and that the newer ones are much more stable and have upgraded technology.

Hopefully this will put my HDTV woes to rest. I'll find out in the upcoming weeks.

I own a 5063w and do not have your problem. however if I set the picture size to "panorama" I get a very similar affect.
not sure if our remotes or menu's are the same. I have a button called "P.SIZE" on my remote. I can change picture size between wide, panorama, 4:3 or zoom. if you can make sure you have it set at "Wide"(16:9) and not "Panorama"

I suspect that it happens when you are using the analog coax input and stretching the video. Just make sure you use either the digital S-Video, component, or DVI input from the cablebox.

hope that helps.

Folks, I have been enjoying my HLP5085W for over a month now. Only last Saturday I got my HD box from Comcast. This is a Motorola box with only component connections (and no DVI input). The high-def pictures from ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, etc., all have black boxes around all the four sides not just the top and bottom. I have set the Picture to "Wide" mode. Due to the four black bars, the picture looks really small. I hate that. Plus these Hi-Def pictures constantly "jerks" or shakes. I am not sure what is going on. I have the huge-superbowl party coming soon and I want to make sure the pictures look good. Can someone tell me what I need to do? When I had the cable connected directly to ANT-1, the pictures were fine, albeit, not hi-def but even the analog looked very very nice on the HLP5085. I also have a Panasonic (5 yr old) DVD player connected to the TV and I have no lip-sync problem (so far).

Thanks in advance.

Never mind, friends. I figured out the problem. I downloaded the DCT6200/6208 HD STB manual from the Motorola site and fixed the problem by setting the input to 16:9 and 1080i. That fixed the top and bottom black box problem. The left & right boxes still show up and this is probably because ABC, NBC, CBS trasmit their HD programming in 4:3 format. I would love to see these programs completely occupy the screen but I guess that's not possible. The Discovery and PBS HD programs show properly with the picture showing on the whole screen.

I have the HLP5685 and a HD cablebox with a DVI output and it doesn't make much of a difference in pq between DVI & component cables. The picture looks great in HD. CBS,NBC, and ABC does not always transmit in HD, which means you'll get a 4:3 broadcast. On the other hand, they do broadcast in HD from 8pm to 11pm in NY. HBO, SHO, TMC,and other premium channels broadcast in HD (full screen) with 5.1 surround sound, which I play on my home theater system via optical cable. The Superbowl will broadcast in HD and you should get a full screen, not a 4:3 format. If you don't, call your cable/satelight provider. After all, it is the Superbowl, You show watch it in all it's glory (HD). Good luck...

Thanks, Chopper.

The codes didn't work. The cable box uses a 4 digit code and the Samsung remote only accept a three digit code. I guess that is why Samsung doesn't list the Sci-Atl cable box.

How do you get the 5.1 surround through Optical connection? The 5085W does not come with an Optical out? May be you mean another optical out source????

Today Comcast is swapping my Moto DLT 6200 set-top box with the DLT 6400 (which contains two tuners and built in DVR). I am not sure if they will supply the DVI cables also. But the question is, what is the best way to connect the TV to 5.1 tuner/amp/speakers? I have Technics Tuner/Amp with 5.1 and optical input also. I have a progessive scan dvd player with component and optical outs and of course the HD set-top box from Comcast.

Thanks.

Karthik:
By pass the TV entirely. The optical out from the cable box goes to the surround receiver. Set the internal mute on the TV to on. This will account for any lip sync issues. Don't worry about the DVI cables. The component hookup is fine for cable since the signal has more limiting factors than the difference between dvi and component.

Klaus--just followed your instructions to the letter and that worked wonderfully. Thanks a bunch.

The only reason I wanted to switch to DVI was to avoid the cable clutter (1 DVI versus 3 component).

By the way, I am seeing the bad part of the cable box for the first time. Comcast came yesterday and swapped my Moto 6200 to 6400 set-top box. The TV was fine for a while but now all the pictures have turned green, especially the local HD channels (ABC, NBC, etc). I am not sure what is going on. Since Superbowl is on Sunday, I have decided to call Comcast and request them to give me back my one week old 6200 and take back the 6400 DVR. I guess I jinxed my HLP 5085W.

Karthik:
Check your component cables between the cable box and the tv. Chances are one of them has worked out a bit. Possibly the red one. I had to put a slight crimp on the outer contact (circular one) to keep mine in.

WOW, Klaus, you are the best. Yes, that was the problem. While trying to configure/install all the cables (to tuner/amp, dvd player, etc) I must have jarred the cable loose. The Red component from the TV had come out a little plus I also noticed that the comcast guy had swapped the red with the blue (which I don't think was a problem since when he left the colors were fine). So, fixed both of that and viola, everything is back to normal. Had a sleepless night since I had been pschyed out reading about all the Sammy problems on this forum and other DLP forums, plus superbowl is barely days away.

Folks, I have learnt so much from this forum. This place is worth more than all the consumer magazines+technical magazines+all the useless tech support from many vendors. I really hope the vendor Help Desks people are reading all these forums. They can learn so much from here.

You guys are just awesome. Please keep up the good work.

For those people who are looking to buy the DLP 5085W, my experience using this TV for two months has been good so far. I will keep my fingers crossed. I did buy the extended warranty for 3 yrs from Sears. The TV cost me $2610, after all the price matching and coupon discounts. I completely agree with many members that after paying so much money I don't think we should see even a single problem. I mean, I seldom worried when I bought my good old tube TVs. But these days we all walking on egg shells after buying any of these TVs (DLP, LCD, LCOS, etc). Totally unacceptable, IMHO.

Thanks once again, Klaus, et al, for your patience in helping your fellow Audio/Video enthusiasts.

After switching from component to DVI connection (cable box). I have to say that the component displayed a more smoother pq where as the DVI displays a more sharper, but grainy pq. I'm considering switching back to component. Does anyone have an opinion?

Does anyone knows about 4667 or 5067?
Price seems to be close to 4663/5063.
If lip-sync issues are solved, it would
be my first choice.

Does anyone know if the 74 series has the same video game delay problem that the 63 series has. Or if any of the samsung dlp model's can be used to play xbox and playstation games in HD with out the delay?

FYI

I don't think xbox or PS2 transmit in HD. I'm pretty sure they are a 480I format. That doesn't mean it won't be scaled up to screen size, but that's still not HD. As for delay issues, I recommend you take your game player to the store and hook it up. They don't care. Then, there will be no doubt.

I have the 4674 and it is great! the picture is stunning, cable reception is acceptable on all SD (even analog) channels and DVDs are upconverted to almost HD quality and are very cinematic. I don't even send the set a audio signal since I use a surround system. I have no lip sync issues attribuable to the set, I did have some that went away with the old cable box replacement. Highly recommended.

Let's see...."going with the 5674" is a leaning position. You will have to give up that Captain Kirk pedestal...darn. You will gain 6 more inches of screen....oh yes! You will forfeit the 7 segment 10,800rpm color wheel for a 6 segment 9000rpm color wheel. If you don't see any rainbows it doesn't matter. Other than asthetics they are the same DMD chip and 4th gen light engine. What are you waiting for?

Don't hold your breath to see the Samsung 74 series in BB or CC. They are the Tantus model, akin to the XBR Sony line, and are only available to certain retailers. Look for a tweeter store or do an online search.

You will be waiting until late summer or fall for a set costing twice as much with a 1080P native display that no broadcaster will be transmitting for quite some time!

Why wait for that? The 74 is awesome!

My newly-arrived Samsung 5685 delivers the best video image that I've seen on any TV, particularly with a good HD signal. I was very concerned about possible fan noise and color wheel noise when searching for a DLP TV, but neither is a problem with the 5685, even in my very quiet viewing room. The design of this TV makes it "art" even when it's turned off.

I've seen that look sometimes using DVI connection. Sammy's like a component connection and some color adjustment. I turn my color down to 43-45. In setup, I add a notch or two of green color weakness. In picture I like a "normal" color tone. As for the rest, about 50-55 on brightness, 80-90 on contrast, about 60 on sharpness, and I have no tone control. (greyed out)

What Sammy to buy? I have a gift certificate to BestBuy and would like to purchase a Sammy there. Unfortunately, they do not have the HLP-4674W as yet. They do have the 4663W at a great price ($1999). Is there that much difference between the two, to warrant waiting? Another reason I want to buy from BestBuy is to get the installation. Please help.

Hi Roberta,

Best Buy may never carry the 74 series. For some stupid reason only certain models are carried by certain stores. The 74 series has fewer if any production issues and a little better contrast, but it also costs hundreds more as it's a newer model. I have the 63 series and I'll admit that my lamp and color wheel had to be replaced with the newer, better parts in the first 6 months. However, I bought last spring, and the better parts may be installed in more recent 63 sets. Samsung service was excellent and all is fine with mine. The picture is beautiful. Just get the extended warranty because these are new inventions. It will pay for itself in lamp replacements anyway over time.

Thanks for the help. At the store I thought the picture was great. Especially since we currently have a 32" Sony Wega SD. It is time we upgraded. I plan on getting the 4 year warranty.

BTW. Did you install yourself? If so, how difficult was it?

Thanks.

I ordered mine online and the driver helped me get it in the front door. It's unusually light once it's out of the big bulky box. The hook-up is simple. You will love HD and digital network broadcasts. I have the SIR TS360 Direct TV HD/Terrestrial receiver and my picture is stunning. I'll say it again, the water scenes are so wet, I keep a mop handy. Discovery HD is like a window on reality. Just amazing! Enjoy!

Everyone touts the Avia Home Theater calibration CD or DVD Essentials CD.
It's probably the best way.

Unil then,

Color tone Normal

Contrast 80-90
Brightness 45 + or - for ambient room light
Sharpness 30
Color 43-46 to suite
Tint...I'm on component and mine is grayed out (not adjustable)

On Setup/Color Weakness I took out some yellow on the green scale.

This may look good to you and may look like crap!
Good luck!

FYI

That depends!

Since it's Comcast cable and cable sucks, you may have standard def issues with regular NTSC analog signals. Even if they say it's digital cable the standard def is still NTSC analog and can be worsened by the use of an HDMI/DVI connection. I'm not saying it will! I'm just saying it can. Try it both ways while watching standard definition. Most people with cable are using component from the cable box and HDMI/DVI for a DVD player.

If it's that far out of color adjustment in your opinion, then it's a service call to 1-800-SAMSUNG. They will come out and use the remote control to enter the service menu and make adjustments. I'm not sure how qualified a tech you will get, but it's worth a try.

Can you explain what aspects or hues of the color you are displeased with? What adjustments have you made? What are your current settings?

RLipp,

I will offer the code with a warning. ***Here be demons!***
You can screw things up royaly if you don't watch out.
Never select the "user reset".

I access the service menu only to check lamp life or reset the hour meter if the lamp is replaced. I'm really sure that's all you should do. That said:

With power off... Mute + 1 + 8 + 2 + Power.
To exit power down 1 full minute until the fan kicks off.

Harold,

Stear clear of the 65. It's the 2nd generation HD2 chip series known for rainbows and strange green tint issues.

The 63 series is the 3rd generation HD3 chip with SmoothCinema technology. It's known for a fabulous picture, no rainbows, but some production issues in spring of 04 were lamp failures and high pitched color wheels. These issues were resolved under warranty without recurrance and may not be present in recent releases.

I've owned a 5063 since the spring of 04 and the picture is stunning. Here is a link for price comparison.

Besides size, how do the Sammy 5685 and 6163 differ? I'm mainly concerned with which one has the best PQ?
Thanks!

FYI

The 85 has a better picture for two reasons.

It has an HD2+Mustang chip with a higher contrast ratio than the HD3 in the 63.

It's a smaller screen, which makes SD look better.

Thanks for the info. I've been doing a lot of research, getting an education! I was always very impressed by the PQ of the 6163, but the 5685 did look a little nicer. However, the pedestal setup would look way out of place in my living room, much to modern. So that brought me to the 5674, which incorporates the HD2+ of the 85 and the looks of the 63. My only concern is, we sit 15' from the TV. Is the 56" going to seem to small at that distance....is the 61" the way to go in a large room?
Thanks!

desertrat
Unregistered guest
Also, has it been determined that the 74 series has the 2500:1 contrast, or 2000:1? If it's the 2000:1 contrast, like I think it is, that's only slightly better than the 63 series' 1500:1. Is the PQ noticebaly better in the 74 over the 63?
Thank again!

FYI
Unregistered guest
Well...1500:1 or 2000:1?
What does it all mean?

I'll tell you that side by side you won't see a big difference. It's all about how black the black is. How black do you want it to be? There are a lot of LCD owners who swear by their colorful displays and yet have accepted the contrast compromise of lighter blacks. I don't hear them complain all that much. So, when it comes to an HD2+ or an HD3 DLP chip, either is ahead of the game.
If you have a room that big you are going to want a big screen. I would almost consider a front projection and a 100 inch screen. However, you have asked about a rear projection DLP and I must say that I would choose the 6163 myself. You will be far enough away for even SD broadcasts to look good.

Hey guys just got comcast hd for my 5085.The picture is in letterbox form how do i change the setting in the cable box to fill my whole screen?

FYI

The converter has a service menu. Contact a cable technician supervisor for instructions on accessing the menu and setting it to pass through mode. This will allow 480P, 720P, and 1080I signal formats to pass through the cable box and be correctly sized by your set.
The dumbas$ cable tech should have done this when he installed it.

Also, if you have a DVD player you must set it's menu to output 16:9 format.

If all of these settings are correct you will still have bars on the side during digital network broadcasts that are not true 720P or 1080I signal formats. Currently, only some prime time shows are true HD.

Some HD movies are in 2:35.1 format, which will have bars on top and bottom. This is normal.
Only movies with a 1:85.1 will fill the screen.
This is more apparent in DVD players.

Bottom line is...the widescreen tv technology is new and broadcasting has to catch up with it.
DVD recordings need to catch up too!
Widescreen DVD's don't mean it will fit widescreen tv's unless it says 1:85.1 format.

Sorry for the Post to this board.... if you know somebody that this applies to please contact them:
CONSUMERS UNITE! If you purchased an LG RU-52SZ61D 52" DLP television and thought it had the newer HD2+ DLP inside, please contact the Competition Bureau of Canada immediately at: compbureau@cb-bc.gc.ca .....you may be eligable for a cash settlement from LG Canada!

Please read the following:
I purchased an LG RU-52SZ61D 52" DLP television via special order from Futureshop on November 6th, 2004 based on the component specifications that were advertised on the Futureshop web site and the LG Canada web site, and after receiving the product it came to my attention that the newer HD2+ DLP technology that was advertised as being in the product was not so, due to what I felt was an inferior picture quality.

I challenged both Futureshop and LG Canada on what I suspected was older technology that was used inside of this product and they both "assured" me that this was not the case and that the product did indeed have the new technology inside as advertised. The LG representative, even went so far as to say that the older technology version of the product (there were two releases of the product - one with the old HD2 DLP chip and .155mm screen and one with the newer HD2+ DLP chip and a .098mm fine pitch lenticular screen) was never even brought in to Canada as they waited for the new release before bringing the product into the country.

Not really believing either of these company's spokespersons, I had LG Canada send the product's serial number to the manufacturer in Korea. A representative of the manufacturer, emailed me to confirm my suspicions as to the inferior components used in the product, based on the detailed serial number records they keep, indicating all components used in the product's manufacture. He also indicated to me that the "advertised" .098mm fine pitch screen was never incorporated into this particular product either! It was only produced with the lower quality .155mm screen....... another false specification passed on to us consumers by LG Canada!

Now, here is where it gets really interesting......After learning this, LG Canada called me to thank me for bringing this matter to their attention and offered me some "LG promotional trinkets" to consider keeping this older technology version of the television. When I refused to accept this offer and pushed them to exchange my TV for one that had the advertised components inside, they flat out refused indicating that this product was not available via LG Canada due to the logistics and expense that would be incurred to bring in one piece from Korea to satisfy only me.

The LG rep also indicated to me verbally that LG Canada had never ever received any of these newer version HD2+ DLP technology products in Canada! This means that they have been selling the older HD2 DLP technology stock they have in their warehouse as the newer HD2+ DLP technology through all of their Canadian Dealers, and the dealers have been advertising the product to the consumer as having this newer HD2+ DLP technology!

WHAT A MAJOR RIP OFF TO ALL CONSUMERS WHO ALREADY PURCHASED THIS TV!

Futureshop has agreed to allow me to return this product for a full refund, however I do feel victimized by this situation having to go through all of this ordeal with these companies for several months now and ending up back where I started - spending countless hours researching the web for product reviews hoping that this time what I purchase will be what it says it is.
I am sure that all of the other customers that purchased this product would be very disgruntled and feel victimized as well after learning of this deceit from LG Canada and the dealers from where they purchased it.

It should be noted that since sending LG Canada notification of my intent to contact the Competition Bureau of Canada (http://cb-bc.gc.ca/epic/internet/incb-bc.nsf/en/h_ct02141e.html), they have just recently updated their website to indicate the components used inside of the RU-52SZ61D 52" DLP television as being the older DLP technology! You can view this at: http://ca.lge.com/en/prodmodeldetail.do?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=010301&categoryId=010301&parentId=0103&m odelCodeDisplay=RU-52SZ61D&model=Select+a+model

I guess LG Canada is now finally admitting the truth about what it is that they are actually selling!
Too bad for all of the consumers that already purchased this unit...
Please forward this post to as many newsgroups as possible. Only by uniting together as consumers will we be able to make this company accountable for their false advertising!

Your 4663 is a native 720P display.
I keep my Sat receiver on 720P.
You might want to try both.
I don't know if the cable box will pass 1080I if you select 720P.
Some broadcasts are 1080I.
I scale everything to 720P myself because it handles fast motion scenes much better.

First, to answer question from somebody awhile back, My local Best Buy (San Diego near I-15 and Mira Mesa Blvd) has had the 4674W on display for months now. The price today is $3200.

Second, I am about to buy the 4674W from Vanns for $2700 net cost (on sale this week), but I am wondering if
1) all those old rumours about the first production units being inferior to the units coming a few months later (i.e. now or summer time) are false now? people talking about going to 7-segment color wheel etc.
2) any production issues which have come to light in the past few months? (faulty units, color wheel malfunction, whatever).

Folks who post here have actual issues.
Those issues are saddled with the 63 series. They are resolvable for those wanting to save money with the year old technology.

The 74 has only a few complaints. The most recent complaint is white vertical lines of which I've seen only two posts. Most 74 owners are very happy with their choice. The blotch screen issue is another minor complaint for some, but overall the set seems to be holding up.

HD2, HD2+, HD3....
You guys seem to have some discrepancies in your explanations of these chips. Can someone tell me in one complete post, 1) what the difference technically is between these chips, and 2) which models have which chips, and 3) what these chips have to do with the 6 and 7 segment color wheels?
Need to purchase within 2 months.(5074?)
