HDTV to DVDR recording question

I purchased a Phillips DVDR75. It has component video inputs on the back. That's why I bought it.

I get my cable through a Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 3100HD from Time-Warner in Cincinnati.

If I use the the component outputs from the 3100hd and input to my dvdr75 I get no picture. I called Phillips and was told the output from the 3100hd had to be interlace not progressive.
How can I tell what format the 3100hd is in?

I have the same HDTV digital box from Time Warner. You cannot record HDTV programs on your DVD recorder at all. The component jacks from your cable box are just for the HDTV source. What you can do is use the S-video and 2 RCA audio jacks and plug that into your DVD recorder to record DTV programs.
