DIRECTV's HD Boost

DIRECTV is boosting its local-into-local HD offerings, adding 16 markets in the next month. By the end of the year the DBS leader says it will offer local channels in more than 97% of U.S. TV households. In total, DIRECTV says it will reach 172 markets with local services, including local HD in 155 markets. HD local service slated to roll out in June includes Biloxi-Gulfport, Miss.; Idaho Falls-Pocatello, Idaho; and Joplin-Pittsburg, Mo. In the third quarter, DIRECTV will launch Albany, Ga.; Columbus, Ga.; Gainesville, Fla.; and Montgomery-Selma, Ark. In the fourth quarter, DIRECTV will launch Abilene-Sweetwater, Texas; Amarillo, Texas; Binghamton, N.Y.; Clarksburg-Weston, W.Va.; Lubbock, Texas; Sioux City, Iowa; Terre Haute, Ind.; Wheeling-Steubenville, W.Va.; and Wichita Falls-Lawton, Texas.

In other news, DIRECTV official gained on-orbit control of DIRECTV 12 from Boeing. The satellite will help bring all that local HD (plus more national HD) to DIRECTV subs.

Plymouth: Everything is going to be HD pretty soon. Yet majority of people are buying non-HD FTAs for the IKS service.

Yes but they exploit the HD channels which cost nothing more than the pass band on a transponder but with the H264 compression, they lose nothing at all.

So many of those HD channels are available on OTA antenna for free!

We will see other provider furnish the HD package for less than Dish,Direct and BEV can offer!
