You can't go far wrong if it records in Divx or AVi.

You can always use a video converter to change the codec.
Look at www.avs4you.com
for free conversion software.

Raw video in the latest version is H.264 codec. Divx 7 is compatible.
Look at divx.com for divx pro software for $9.99.
In general, I can say that whatever the format it records in, there is free or very low cost software available to convert it to alternative formats either for better compression for viewing compatibility.
Recently I downloaded a file that was in 6 part .rar. When I unzipped it it became one .avi file. I could view the .avi file on my computer. I could have converted it to .mp3 for better size. Then I used Sothink software (free) to convert it to DVD and burnt it to make a DVD in DVD format for viewing in my DVD player.
There is Video section in Ecoustics, and you can ask questions there or read that part of the forum for more answers.

kewlsat and kbox uses Transport stream, so it's a file with the extension of .ts
Converting .ts to other formats isn't as difficult as taking an xvid movie for instance and trying to convert it to ts. Every application, utility, tool I've tried to convert xvids to the default format of kbox, would either not play or the quality was degraded with mostly freezes.

I've been trying for the longest time to be able to convert the great xvid movies and play them on my kbox and so far no luck.

99.99999% of people who say to use some program are googling or simply were told by somebody else that it works. Because so far everything I've tried is trash.

To answer the question, I don't think there is one that saves them in mpg or another popular format. Would be nice if it supported mkv containers, avi and mpg containers

James Johnaenel:
I think the questioner's main concern was to be able to use the PVR recordings on his PC. I think there is sufficient standardization there.
For .ts to viewability on PC and DVD, read this article.

http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/dtv2avi.html

What you mentioned was readability on kbox in .ts format a xvid file. I am not sure why you would want to read it on kbox, when a DVD player can be bought for $35. However, although I admit I have not used this tool, I am posting this link for your to further investigate.

.ts is DVD format, DVD format can be easily converted in MPEG-2-3-4, avi and many other support.

Hylo you have to got the driver for playing it on your computer Media player.

@ Nalin Nyda
That's one of the dozen or two applications I've tried on both windows and linux and ojosoft does actually allow you play something back, but there's a skip/pause every single. Essentially it doesn't work.

@ Plymouth
Yeah, it's a digital container and converting it to mpeg is not difficult. I'm referring to the opposite, converting something back to the Transport stream format that's viewable. The problem might be that it has a non-standard frame rate of the two common TS containers. I'm not sure........... I just haven't personally had success converting anything to play in kbox.

The whole idea is that I'm looking at putting a NAS that's networked to the kbox with my system. So I can SSH into my one box with my phone while in the livingroom and then use a torrent application to download the movie I want and move it to the NAS that has other devices mounted to it. Basically downloading, controlling everything from my phone/remote control, so that I don't have to get up.
It's the way the DVB-S system I have setup works.... and I guess I'm hoping I can get what I get out of DVB-S with this FTA box

@ Hylo
You know you can play them with VLC out of the box, you don't need any codec of anything. So if you want to just play it, why convert it. If your trying to create a DVD from the Transport stream file, then that's not difficult.

DVB-S came before FTA boxes, so you'll see that dvb-s standard even legit records with TS. There's software that I use like mythtv that can record to other formats, which I wish kbox would allow
