This may be for the experts only but what is the difference between these 2 display resolutions?

It would appear that the 1024X1024 is better but is it?

The Sony XS and TS plasmas use 1024 X 1024 but their XBR model uses 1024 X 768. What is the difference? Is it a big difference? Are they both High definition?

Thanks for any answeres or comments:-)

I'm not an expert but can relay what I was told. The 1024x768 is barely high def. Something about not enough pixels to get the full effect. The 1024x1024 has a million pixels and is better (and something about the pixels are not square but rectangular hence the two numbers being the same).
You have a good question and hope someone can give better answers.

1024x1024 and 1024x768 have about the same value from picture perception standpoint. What really does matter:
1. Black levels, contrast ratio, color reproduction. XS model uses old Sony's plasma panel and XBR uses the most recent generation of NEC plasma panel, which is better in terms of everything listed at the beginning of this parapraph.
2. XBR uses the latest available Sony Plasma WEGA engine with full set of modules. XS uses older WEGA engine.

As for me, I would go with XBR.

"A 1,024x1,024 display actually has slightly more total pixels (and more pixel rows) than a 1,280x720 screen-"
1024x768 is considered high-def, but that's borderline

1024 X 768 is the standard low end HD WIDESCREEN display 1024 x 1024 would only be 4:3 aspect screen ( as far as resolution goes it is 1:1 ) and 1024 x 768 looks great. If you can find a tv the does 1280 x 720 Like the samsung DLP's that is an amazing display. You basicly need a minimum of 720 pixels horizontaly to be HD 768 is even better but its vertical res is a little low at 1024.

one there thing to paul's comment, that is true in total pixels but what you need to realize is that all HD is widesceen so if you are watching HD on 1024 x 1024 you are only useing about 750 horizontal pixels. adding more to the vertical res helps alot thus 1280 X 720, the best you could find at the moment you have an actual and display res of 1980 x 1080, there you would lose nothing in pixel count.

In regards to "1024 x 1024 would only be 4:3 aspect screen ( as far as resolution goes it is 1:1 ) "
1024x1024 is widescreen not 4:3 or 1:1. The pixels are rectangular not square

I have been following this interesting thread. I see the confusion beginning to form. ehScorpio has basically answered the original question. To the average eye, you will not see a difference in the resolutions but is dependant on the technology used. As stated, the XS uses older technologies and XBR newer so stay with the latter for best results.
To settle the debate on 1024 by 1024, the Sony models are widescreen and use the full 1024 horizontal and vertical resulting in a higher vertical resolution and lower horizontal resolution than standard 1280 by 720. Again, to the average eye there is no difference.
Lastly, new display devices are being developed which will display the full 1920 by 1080. As of now, the only Sony product to do so is the Qualia front projector at 30 grand.
