NDS Hopes To Conclude New DirecTV Deal Soon

Satellite News via NewsEdge Corporation : NDS, which signed a deal with DirecTV in the first quarter of this year to supply Conditional Access cards (CA), anti-piracy measures, hopes to follow this up by concluding a further deal with the operator.

NDS CFO Rick Medlock told Satellite News, "We are confident of being a major supplier for the full DirecTV platform. I think there is a pretty good chance for us to get that contract. DirecTV is undoubtedly the biggest opportunity, as there are over 20 million set-top Boxes (STBs) out there today for DirecTV. Therefore, if we can supply middleware to the majority of those and we can develop personal video recorder (PVR) and iTV applications for some of the channels that will be on DirecTV that by and far and away makes DirecTV one of our biggest customers."

NDS really cemented its position in the satellite pay-TV sector in 2003 by securing key contract wins with Viasat in the Nordics and Foxtel in Australia, among others, in the March/April timeframe. While the DirecTV CA deal may be the biggest one in terms of potential numbers, the Viasat deal is also incredibly significant. Viasat decided to move from the Viaccess CA system, which had been widely h@cked, to the NDS system.

This new CA (Conditional Access) cards system is expected to be operational later this year. Medlock believes the deal is a "groundbreaker" in the sense it is unusual for a pay-TV operator to move from one system to another in this way. Medlock believes there could be a number of long-term benefits of the deal. "Usually, the times when people select a new CA system is on conversion from analog to digital or when you are launching a new service," he commented. "This is the first time that any platform has switched because of piracy. Once people are confident that Viasat's conversion has worked and done the job, I am sure that other platforms will be interested in hearing what we have got to say. Our strategy is to target those types of accounts."

With contracts with some of the biggest satellite pay-TV platforms, Viasat, BSkyB, DirecTV, NDS will play a crucial role in making sure piracy issues remain under control. Viasat, in particular, has lost millions of euros in revenues through piracy, and it hopes its move to NDS will lead to a brighter future.

In terms of revenues, it looks as though it could be a good year for both major CA providers: The Kudelski Group and NDS. Both companies are expecting strong revenue growth during the next 12 months. It is NDS' client base in the satellite pay-TV sector that is pacing the company's growth.

"If you look at the population of NDS customers and compare it to some of our competitors, we have a very healthy customer base," Medlock said. "These are customers, which are well-funded, have strong business plans and are in markets which are certainly going to see substantial growth over the long term."

Cable Vs. Satellite

While the company has an enviable list of satellite pay-TV operators as customers, it is also hoping to make more of an impact on the cable landscape. Medlock admitted, "We have done trials with two major cable operators, and we have our existing cable deals with RCN and Cablevision, but we hope to win business with our trial operators. In terms of new customer wins, cable is probably the area where there is more chance of customer wins in terms of absolute wins compared to satellite."

The company has around $179.4 million in cash available for acquisitions, although Medlock admitted the company is "cautious" here. It also has the capability to issue new stock.

Its last significant acquisition was in September 2003 when it purchased the MediaHighway middleware business from Thomson. The deal gives NDS the opportunity to potentially bundle CA and middleware in one package for operators. In terms of its relationship with middleware provider OpenTV, Medlock said, "We already have an existing customer base with NDS Core middleware. Ongoing, customers need an advanced architecture like MediaHighway so it made sense to try and bring the two together and provide an easier route for operators. Also MediaHighway had a contract with DirecTV."

He continued, "Fundamentally, NDS will aim to provide middleware where our customers ask for it. But we are not going out and overtly trying to sell middleware in its own right."

However, while both companies will work together on major accounts like BSkyB, Sky Italia and Foxtel, both will look to play a key role in the U.S. market as more interactive services become available. News Corp [NWS] is likely to drive this through DirecTV. In terms of the market opportunity here, Medlock commented, "The U.S. interactive marketplace will be huge but there is no question that the U.K. is the leader in that at the moment. However, in the future, the market in the United States will be so much bigger. With the advanced platform that DirecTV will become plus digital cable starting to make the big migration from analog and having a platform to develop applications, I think the potential market is huge."

With a slew of new contracts in the satellite sector and the acquisition of MediaHighway, the company has increased its workforce by almost a third in the last year. The company now has 41 million active encryption smarts cards in homes around the globe. The company also played a key role in the launch of two new digital satellite platforms, Foxtel in Australia and Galaxy Satellite Broadcasting in Hong Kong. Growth should be strong here as well as on the satellite platforms in Europe.

"Sky Italia has announced that it is going to do a full swap-out of the MediaGuard Seca boxes they inherited from Telepiu," Medlock said. "For NDS, that is probably worth around 1million to 2 million additional smart cards that we would supply on the back of that."

He continued, "Foxtel is starting to do the analog-to-digital conversion in Australia. From our perspective, Foxtel has had 600,000 analog cable customers. With the Optus platform as well, this market could be worth an extra 1million to 2 million net subscriber additions for NDS."

TDK Semiconductor's 73S8024R Smart Card Interface ICs Approved by NDS for Use with VideoGuard Conditional Access Software in Set-TopBoxes

Business Wire via NewsEdge Corporation : IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 2004--TDK Semiconductor Corporation's 73S8024R low-cost smart card interface IC is now approved in accordance with NDS requirements assuring operability of the device within set-top boxes, digital TVs and Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) that use NDS VideoGuard(r) -- the world's leading conditional access software solution for pay-TV content delivery security. With this approval, more than 35 set-top box manufacturers can now use the TDK 73S8024R in their products.

"NDS approval represents a major milestone for TDK Semiconductor's efforts in the smart card industry," said Jean-Christophe Doucet, product manager at TDK Semiconductor. "With its superior noise and current performance and low cost, we expect the TDK 73S8024R smart card interface IC to achieve a leadership position in the set-top box marketplace over the next several months."

According to Peter Yaxley, manager of consumer devices for NDS, "The approval of the TDK 73S8024R smart card interface IC confirms that the device is suitable for all set-top boxes that employ NDS VideoGuard(r) conditional access software operating with smart cards operating at up to 13.5MHz. As part of the approval process, NDS was involved with TDK Semiconductor in all aspects of the device development. TDK Semiconductor has worked hard through the entire process, and our set-top box customers can now be confident the TDK 73S8024R smart card interface IC will meet their performance expectations."

In operation, the TDK 73S8024R smart card interface IC translates the digital signals from the host to analog signals recognized by the smart card, and vice versa. Doucet explained that this device provides a stable 3V or 5V VCC power source to the smart card from an on-chip low drop-out voltage regulator, yielding a 10x improvement in noise performance over other solutions in the marketplace that employ step-up DC-DC converters, while boosting current draw to as much as 90mA. By retaining pin-for-pin compatibility with existing components, using the TDK 73S8024R in a set-top box smart card reader requires changing the value of a single capacitor only.

Smart Card Interfaces

In addition to NDS approval, the TDK Semiconductor 73S8024R smart card interface IC supports ISO-7816-3 and EMV-2000 (EMV4.0) electrical requirements and is the most protected device of its class in the market. Additional card protection features are provided to guard against hardware faults and guarantee emergency card deactivation in the event of card extraction, card over-current, supply voltage failure, LDO regulator failure and device overheating. Supply voltage fault can optionally be adjusted to match the same operating voltage range as the host microcontroller. Other on-chip resources include a crystal oscillator and circuitry for card clock generation, an LDO voltage regulator capable of supplying a high current of up to 90mA, and a complete set of buffers for data I/O. Only a single external capacitor is required for operation.

Availability

The TDK 73S8024R smart card interface IC is available off-the-shelf in SO28 and QFN32 packages, the former for use as a pin-for-pin replacement in current designs employing the TDA8004, and the latter -- the smallest footprint for this type of device on the market -- for new designs that can take advantage of a significant savings in board space. Prices for the devices start at $0.95 each in 1k quantities. Contact TDK Semiconductor's authorized distributors -- Nu Horizons ( hxxp://www.nuhorizons.com) and All American ( hxxp://www.allamerican.com) -- for further information in the U.S. Authorized distributors for other countries can be found by visiting the company's web site at hxxp://www.tdksemiconductor.com An Application Note dedicated to NDS applications and demo boards are available upon request to validate device performance.

Dow Jones News Service via NewsEdge Corporation : NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--NDS Group PLC (NNDS), the set-top box software maker controlled by News Corp. (NWS), is working to introduce its digital video recorder technology to the U.S., either through DirecTV Group Inc. (DTV) or through cable operators.

Ever since News Corp. took control of DirecTV, the country's largest satellite TV provider, there has been widespread speculation that NDS might replace TiVo Inc. (TIVO) as DirecTV's DVR supplier. TiVo recently revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that its contract with DirecTV is set to expire in February 2007. TiVo is a pioneer in digital video recorder technology, which allows customers to pause and rewind live TV, record programs, and fast forward through commercials.

NDS currently provides DVR and interactive technology to BSkyB, News Corp.'s European satellite TV venture. In addition to DVRs, BSkyB offers its viewers extra interactive features to enhance sports and news coverage as well as games, quizzes and voting. Chase Carey, DirecTV's new chief executive, has repeatedly said he hopes to carry over some of BSkyB's interactive functions to DirecTV.

NDS wants to adapt its interactive technology from BSkyB so it can be employed on DirecTV, Abe Peled, NDS Chief Executive, told Dow Jones.

London-based NDS has already benefited by News Corp's entry into the U.S. satellite TV market. Its contracts with DirecTV ended in August 2003, but were recently renewed in March. The company supplies middleware and conditional access - the means through which pay-TV operators control access to their programming stream - to DirecTV. NDS said it expects the new contracts will boost revenue in fiscal year 2005, which starts in July.

In addition to working the News Corp. angle, NDS is angling to get in with cable operators. The company currently supplies conditional access technology to Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC) and RCN Corp. (RCNC). Moreover, NDS recently piloted its conditional access software with Comcast Corp. (CMCSA, CMCSK) over a Motorola Inc. (MOT) network. .TABLE NDS is "working to develop DVR for U.S. cable, and we think there is a good opportunity for it," Peled said. But he also acknowledges that getting cable operators on board won't be easy.

"It takes a long time and patience because cable companies have not moved very quickly in the U.S.." But that could change now that News Corp. has entered the picture, he added.

NDS reported fiscal third-quarter results Tuesday. The company posted net income of $8.02 million, or 14 cents a share, on revenue of $104.2 million.

This NDS product is supposed to be the new P6/Gold card mentioned below !!

DTV P4/D1 Access Cards Being Replaced !!

BETTER LEARN DISH AND FTA IT SEEMS!!

Some more bad news for testers of DTV out there. DTV and NDS announced a new 6 year contract on March 6th as we all know. In several other docments, agreements and stock holder meetings being reported by The Wall Street Journal now, DirecTV via new owner
Murdock is making some MAJOR changes fast now.

They have developed a new card for DTV which is gold or yellow in color and is being called "The Gold Card" now by the Underground and the NDS Media PR. It is out now in Beta testing with a few selected very secretive DirecTV users. I have yet to see it but have heard of this card for a few months now as being real and is now confirmed by some who have seen the card it is real and does exist. Hope to get a picture soon
of it but this thing is really being kept under wraps by DTV and NDS now.

Here also is a press release a couple days ago by NDS that is also futher Intriguing. Seems PIRACY for DTV is coming to a major slowdown even more now with this new NEWS and things to be. They are saying they hope to have this new card in complete operation and
exchange by NEXT SUMMER at latest.

Well, thats it for now but this card is most likely based on the same unh@cked card being used in Europe the past two years and now in Australia and no one as of yet has h@cked into it in any shape, way or form.

Appears DTV has finally got things right with the cards now even more so than with the P4/D1. SO anything with current DTV cards now that may come out or is out in the underground deep down somewhere it will all be short lived.
