I have Boardband Internet connection
connected thru a Motorola Surfboard
Model SB5120.
What do I need to do to connect a Laptop to use around the house?

You need to get yourself a Wireless Router and connect it to your modem.

So it should go like this
Surfboard SB5120 > Wireless Router > The Laptop should pick up the Wireless connection and you're good to go.

I recommend one of the 3 below $100.
I used them all and they are the most reliable in that range.

D-LINK DIR-625
Cisco WRT54GL
D-LINK DIR-655
