USB to serial convertors are notorious for problems and for slowness.
Buy only the type with its own installation CD.
Do not allow windows XP to install it.
Manually install using CD
Select COM1, or COM2, or COM3 or COM 4 port.
Use device manager in your computer to check and select the right port.

Go and buy an IO Gear GUC232A

Windows XP won't recognize it at all. It won't try to install anything that you DO NOT want. No obscure driver. You will have to use their CD for installation.

The product, once installed, will zip easily at 115 kilobits per second serial speed and will work guaranteed. IO Gear has a reputation to respect.

I have used this product both at home and profesionnaly and it is the PERFECT USB to Serial converter !!!!

I also bought Digi Edgeport-1 converters at work. But this is only if you have $91 US dollars to spare... Very reputable company !
