K-Box Hero Review

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well I got this box late last week for testing. It should be released to the Public by 2 May 2008 or the following week. Some people have "speculated" this unit is a "spinoff from C0lsat" The supplier assures me it is NOT a c00lsat, although some features DO appear to have been "borrowed" from previous versions of CS. It does use a c00lsat loader. The marketing is supposed to be "targeted" at former c00lsat users as well as being appealing to Captiveworks users.

The unit:

Sleek black look approx 2.5" high X 8.5" deep X 10" wide. It has a channel display screen as well as 3 buttons on the front, on/off, channel up, channel down. It also has a front panel door which conceals a card slot, (NO reader installed), and the USB port, (can be upgraded via USB). The rear has the usual coax connectors, (sat as well as Antenna), as well as RCA connectors, (Y/Pb/Pr), Component video, S-Video, SPDIF, On/Off switch, and RS232 connector.

When upgrading may be done via the USB or RS232. I used the RS232, and it requires the use of the c00lsat 6100/7000 loader. Loading of the latest bin took approx 4 minutes, it will count down as loading then completed it displays the word END, you may then disconnect and reboot.

Setting up the sats was very straight forward and the unit shows which sat is tuned in the upper left. It is compatible with DiSEqC 1.0, 1.1 DISTANT, and 1.1. I personally use a EMP 9 X 8 MULTI switch and the setup was straight forward and simple, (I did find that doing a scan using the 1.1 DISTANT setting I tended to get more channels during the scan).

Then menu is VERY sparse and therefore not complicated to navigate. It does have one neat feature, (System restore), this is same as factory default on most other stb's BUt it also allows you to store "stored position" which basically takes a "snapshot" of your settings as they are now set. the last option is "system data" which allows you to store system parameters, AND channel data for future use. So presumably if you did this after loading a new bin you could recover your settings.

The unit, I received came supplied with an IKS, (Internet Key Sharing), dongle. which has it's own power supply and is connected via the RS232 port to the unit. The dongle is approx 1/2" X 3" X 3". Once connected to the your net via a RJ45 Ethernet cable the dongle has lights to indicate it is connected. I have yet to "discover" how the end user determines if the unit is running via the stand alone bin or IKS.

Scanning the sats was easy and takes approx 2 minutes per sat to complete. and lists how many channels were scanned. It also displays 2 "status bars" during the scan as well as a moving status bar which turns GREEN when scanning an active TP and turns RED during inactive TP's.

I have my unit connected to a 42" Panasonic LCD and using the Y/Pb/Pr connections the picture quality is VERY good. Navigating through channels is easy and you may sort your channels by channel number or alphabetically.

Switching of channels was fast and smooth, (even though I have a VERY complicated switch setup).

Once the bin was loaded and sats scanned I tuned in and a/r took approx 3 minutes. At this point, there is NO freezing or other issues. The bin i loaded for testing was the 1.16.50 version, (FIRST release other than Factory bin). ALL reports I have seen state that it has continued to operate after the latest MECM).

There is NO history of support thus far with this unit, but based on what I have seen thus far, this is an excellent unit for those who are looking for an easy to setup/use unit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --
support

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The support is being done by the HERO support group, which i have been told has no connection to the CS coders. I am currently running on a STAND alone bin...

The first Dongle bin was released today.

I don't yet have a FIRM price on the unit, but I am hearing approx $195 - 200. That price will likely INCLUDE the dongle So in the "entry level" price range

as i see it its not complicated
The KBOX K1 receiver comes with a network module that lets you network it to your router or Internet.

On the module itself, there is an ethernet port, so you'll need to connect cable from it to your router or modem. If you don't want to run cable, you can use powerline adapters »

As for the functions, the KBOX K1 uses similar technology as the nFusion. The bonus is that there is the addition of a USB port and a faster processor and more memory. You can also use the KBOX stand-alone!
I just received my K-Box K1 from Transat a few days, the setup was simple, and straightforward but . I am currently running using the receiver with my network, and the box is amazing, quality of picture awesome,I think this is better than nfusion in all ways. I will be recommending a few of these units for friends who want an excellent entry level box. All channels are there

This i copied from a website which is selling the Kbox. as far i know its the best in the market with no channel is hiding :-)

one thing they missed in the box , if it was built in wireles.. that would be awesome, little expensive if u add cost of netgear..

the reason for that is then the receiver would not be able to compete in the market
right now they are selling as a package
but later it will be sold on its own so you can buy receiver at a lesser price and add dongle later if you want
