If I buy a DVD recorder with digital tuner in it, can I hook it up to HTS to get the 5.1 surround sound?

If the receiver has a digital input, yes.

I have it all hooked up. Now do I have to wait for a show to be broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1 to get all 5 speakers to work? I have receiver set to auto.

One more question, and this may sound stupid, but I am new to this. Do I have to leave on the DVD recorder, and the receiver for it to work?
Another words does the digital dvd recorder have to be on for the 5.1 surround to come in.

Yes, the DVD recorder would have to be on, unless you use the TV's digital output. All the speakers should work in Pro-Logic when programming isn't broadcast in 5.1. You may need to set the DVD to bitstream in the audio menus to get 5.1.
