I need some technical help. Been downloading bins for a couple of years with no problem until I switched from XP to Vista and changed to a laptop that does not have port for a null cable. So, I go out and buy a Belkin USB/serial adapter, download the driver in my new laptop with vista thinking everything is ok. Try to download the new bin to my receiver and HELLO, Windows Vista is saying they can't find the windows software for my device. I re directed to where I downloaded the driver, but seems like Vista and this driver aren't compatible. Now this is over my head. Am I not going in the right direction with this? Is there another type of adapter i should be using? Help, I'm frustrated now.

USB/Serial adaptors work without trouble on Windows 98, with some trouble on Windows XP, and may work with a lot of adjustments on Windows Vista.
On the XP, you go into Device Manager and change the Port to 1,2,3, or 4. I do not have Vista,so I do not know what should be done.

Rocky,
Statements like that do not help. If you will google usb serial adapter vista you will see people all over the world are havening trouble with some of them. Just because you got lucky and tried 2 that was vista compatible does not mean the ones he used were. Your computer could have a diferant vista than hin as well like an example his could be home your pro. More updates, the manufacture could have loaded more drivers in yours before you got it, all kinds of things could be differant. We are all here to help it is best to just find out as much about a problem from a user and try to help them solve it. Saying things like "well it worked for me easy" like you just did is rude, and not helpful.

Furthermore I found a page on the manufacture of his adapter's website the stated it was not vista compatible so even with your ease of installing devices so far in your machine it would not have been compatible.

He has already stated he was going to return the item and get one more vista friendly so the topic was closed so to speak anyway..

David I posted a link to a site that has instructions on how to get the one from radio shack to work...too late to help you now but I am glad you got one that works for you..

Every Time Winblows introduces a new OS we all go threw this same problem....devices and programs that worked great with the older OS's can have trouble working in the new environment.
