Is it generally better use the DAC in the dvd player or the one in the receiver when using dvd player for cd's?I know it depends on the quality of the machines being used but generally speaking.

Use the one in the receiver unless you have an ANALOG bypass on the receiver. Then choose whichever one you prefer.
I you listen to the analog outs of a DVD player you are actually sill listening to the receivers DSP because it is converting that analog signal to digital then back again - a waste.
