HDMI Cable Signals

Hey all, I'm pretty new to A/V, so sorry if I sound more confused than I should be.

I've just purchased a Samsung LN-S5296D LCD HDTV (1080p, 2xHDMI inputs).

I want to get my computer video/audio out on my new TV, so I'd use a product like Gefen's Digital Audio/Video to HDMI converter

http://www.lenexpo-electronics.com/product.php?productid=16545

To connect the DVI output from a video card and Digital Optical Audio output from the sound card to this device, which converts it to HDMI.

My problem is that I estimate I will need a 50' HDMI cable to get from my computer room to my TV room. I can't find any definitive information regarding possible signal attenuation or degradation over that distance.

I mean... they MAKE HDMI cables that long.... so does that mean there would be no attenuation over that distance? There will be 1 turn in the cable. It will be ran through a wall, along the ground, and under a cable protector by the doorway to my apt into my TV's HDMI in. (I'll then use my TV's RCA out to go to my Sony DAV-DX255's Audio in so I can get the audio out my TV's speakers and (if need be) through the surround sound as well.

Thoughts?

Distance HDMI runs can be a problem. Check out these articles:

This cable seems like a good deal.

Wow. Good reads John S., thanks.

This is a nightmare! Reliability up to 15 feet?! Yarg. The writer on that forum seems very sided, but it's not to say he doesn't know his field. (He seems very anti-HDMI)

That means I'd need 4-15 foot sections at about $50 a pop, and 3 HDMI Extenders at about $200 each. Hmm. $800 to get video/audio from my PC? Forget that!

I'm glad you wrote about this. I wonder if sending an Analog signal would work. What is components max resolution? I'm trying to send 1920x1080 @ 60hz over 50'. Component only carries video, right? A 50' run would go for about $150 or so, but then I guess I'd need to send audio via analog as well. I'd need some kind of powered splitter that would duplicate (and re-amplify the signal from each 1/8" jack on the PC (Center/Sub, Front L/R, Rear L/R) and provide 3 outputs for each (1 to computer speakers, 1 to computer surround headphones, and one out to the HDTV)

Does anyone have any experience on what to expect if I converted from DVI to Component and 1/8" Mini to RCA ?

I know audio is not the topic of this forum, but it raises a question that how could a RCA cable which holds L/R audio properly transfer L/R audio from a Front AND Rear channel, not to mention the Center/Sub?

Ugh, I think I got more questions out of this answer :-)

Yeah I did. I looked into getting a 108Mbps wireless network and just sling it across wirelessly. But I've gotten 2 reasons why not to go this route.

First, I've heard nightmares for even people on these 802.11n (108Mbps) networks, that video and audio can come across distorted or very choppy - that's just not acceptable for me.

Secondly, I will be hosting games too, and I felt it unfair to any gamer who connects to my server if this system is eating up 90%+ of my network from just audio/video. Thanks nonetheless.
