I think Emerson is a -R/RW recorder, you've got the wrong discs.

DVD-RW or DVD-R. Try to get 8x -R discs, not 16x. Buy decent quality discs. If you want to buy them in a B&M store, get Verbatim. Best buy has them on sale all the time. You may have to get discs online to get 8x though. Taiyo yuden are excellent discs too, but you'll probably only find them online. The Value TY discs online are usually 16x, they are sold as 4x or 8x, but they are usually 16x. 16x discs may or may not work.

16x discs may not work. Did you format the RW?

Somewhere in the disc menus. I haven't used that recorder, so I can't tell you exactly how. Look in the manual.

If you want the discs to play in other players, use video mode. If it won't even format the disc, it's probably defective.
