Need High Quality VHS to DVD

I am archiving several home movies for my in-laws whose eighteen-year-old son recently passed away. I will be converting over 30 tapes, so economically it seems to make more sense to purchase equipment and do the work myself rather than take the tapes to a third party.

What can I do to achieve the best quality when converting from VHS to DVD?

Are the combo units better, or should I buy a VCR with S-Video out and connect it to a DVD recorder?

Should I focus on a certain brand or model?

Any help is appreciated, and so is detail. I'm a computer guy, not an A/v guy, but I'm still the most qualified in my family for this task. It is very important, so I greatly appreciate any advice. Please keep in mind that the quality of the finalized DVD recording is my primary concern.

If you want the best possible quality, you need an S-VHS VCR with TBC, $400 new, you can probably get one on ebay for less than half that, maybe even a quarter that.

You can buy a seperate TBC, but they aren't cheap.

Two followup questions:

1) So, then I interface the S-VHS VCR to a DVD recorder via the S-Video cable?

2) Will the quality of reproduction from this method be noticeably better than a standard JVC brand DVD Recorder/VHS unit?

Thank you Mr. Massey. Just in looking around today it is obvious that your contributions are incredibly helpful to a number of people.

Yes, s-video would be the best. I haven't used one of them, so I can't say what the quality difference would be. It would depend on the quality of the tapes how much difference there would be. Time base correctors fix imperfections in analog recordings, so the worse the tapes are, the more difference there will be.
