I must have missed something when I set my home theater up. When I put in a dvd it only shows in black and white. Any suggestions?

While playing with my friends set up -trying to fix it without the manual. I plugger the L and R into an alternate L and R. this gave me black and white. Look on the back of the TV for a separate receptacle
