DVD-C920

I know this is not the right forum, but I don't know anyone on the DVD forum :-). Anyway, I just brought one of these home for a 30 day demo. H1p, you have one of these, what interconnects did you use for the 6 channel input? Anyone who has suggestions is free to respond.

Phil,

I know, I really only post here...it's the best forum (though i've been hesitant about some HDTV questions I have because it is SO off-topic).

Anyway, I just use three pairs of monster interconnects. Nothing super special, just decent. I just got a free consumer reports in the mail (which covers all AV gear, I must be on some list) which ranks the unit you just got as excellent. I have the DVC6480 but I just checked the Yam site and the units (in usual wacky Yam fashion) are identical.

I'm defintely interested in your review of it. Let me know! My biggest gripe is that I can't switch to a specific disk from the front panel...I need to use the remote to, say, skip to disk 3. Also the remote is pedestrian...but I use a Sony Commander.

Yes, they're the same units. So far, its not a very user friendly machine, but the performance is very good.

More or less the way I feel...

I find:
-the display a bit dim (lit not witted)
-the lack of disk select on the face lame
-the remote lame
-the lack of repeat functions on the face lame
-that it's pretty sensitive to scratched disks

And probably some other stuff. Consumer reports also found it less than user-friendly.

BUT, I find the performance enough to offset most of my gripes.

Hey H1p,

Well, I've done some research on this one considering I got somewhat burned on my Pioneer Elite DVD player.

The Yamahas, like the Denon have their video built on the Panasonic engine, which is widely regarded as the best progressive pictures. The 6480/920 is roughly a CP72, which puts it right near the top of PQ. Here's a list of several units:

http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all

It doesn't have this unit, but I would say without testing the PQ is about the same as the CX1. Its hard to find anyone who owns this unit on the forum, probably because of the features, and they all seem to gravitate toward the Denon.

The main reason to go with a unit like this is the audio quality. You know how I feel about the DACs in my Yam and I'd have to say that they are nearly equivalent. There are suble differences between the units, which probably have to do more with the slight difference between the 192/24 burr/brown units and the 96/24 burr/brown units. I slightly prefered the DACs in my receiver, but the difference was negligable.

The DVD-A playback is excellent. I used a pair of monster analog connects for the mains, the supplied cables for the rear and center channel, and a monster composit video cable for the sub. LOL, wont that make the cable purist hair stand on end. It worked fine of course. I used America "Comming Home" as the demo. I didn't find a real differnce with the 96/24 surround vs the 192/24 stereo, but I'll have to experiment more.

Overall, if you can live without some of the user friendly features, this unit is an excellent bargan. Anyway got to go for now. I'll chat with you more about it later. Great find.
