I'm having problems with audio playback on my DVD player. I own a LG DVD 3000E connected via a scart cable to a Panasonic TX 25CK. I was watching Lord of the Rings - Special Edition in Stereo Surround sound and noticed how inconsistant the sound levels were. Sometimes the background music was too loud, then to low, and at other times characters would speak clearly and then a few moments later, speech would be so low as to be inaudible.
I'm certain that I've set the soundtrack playback on the DVD player to Stereo Surround sound before playback. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? Is there a difference between stereo sound and Stereo Surround sound?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I am assuming you are in the UK because I have never seen a SCART in person.
Question: Does the scart pass audio to the TV? If so try looking in BOTH the DVD and the TV audio setup and turn off any fake stereo enhance or fake surround. Panasonic and Maganavox TV are VERY good at making speakers appear around the room. Unfortunately they sometimes make dialogue sound kind of distant. You want to get as close to plain-old, un-enhanced stereo as possible.

Hi Derek
Your assumption is indeed correct, I am in the UK. The sound is passed through the scart lead to the TV; I have no external speaker setup. I'm certain I have no pseudo-surround features turned on; the DVD has such a feature but it is turned off.

I agree. But I read on Dolby's website that Dolby Digital 2.0 can be encoded to carry four speaker signals. That's why I asked if Stereo Surround is different to ordinary stereo. Is the Stereo Surround channel on the DVD some sort of enhanced stereo that needs more than two speakers?

Is Lord of the Rings the only DVD where this happens? It may simply be the mix.
Most "Surround"s created from stereo add more of what's different in the two channel stereo to the speakers to pump up the ambience for speakers close together. Unfortunately dialogue is something that the two channels have in common and that type of sound will be suppressed. That's why voices become distant with enhanced stereo.
Dolby Digital 2 ususally means downmixed stereo from a Dolby Digital 5.1 stream. Again even that mix might not sound good. My Philips can do this in the player as well. Check to if your player can - Set the DVD Audio options to DD 5.1 and use the DVD players system-wide audio setup to downmix it to stereo.
I hope it's only one disk. Beyond that, I'm stumped.

I have a kenwood vr 600 500 watt surround reciever that requires 8 - 16 amp speakers.I have a pair of pro-dynamic speakers that are 4 ohms. What can I do to match them with out wiring them to the same channel in sequence? Any matching devices out there? Im new in this surround stuff. Thanks
Jean- If you are using an optical cable pull it out from the back of the dvd and see if the red light is still comming out of the back. If not then that is the problem. If so then check that the cable is securely attached it could be decoder in the reciever. If you have a coax connection then you may have to test it out on a different reciever. If you don't get sound with a different dvd then it is the decoder. Also if you had a surge protector the manufaturer of it may handle the cost of repair or replacement. If not then get a monster power center with clean power. Depending on how bad power is in your neighborhood it will probably make a bigger difference in picture and sound than better cables do.
I just purchased a Kenwood HTB805, which has the VR-606 Receiver and the DV-605 DVD Player. It was an 'open box' item from eBay. It was supposed to work properly.
I have the dvd routed through the receiver (obviously) then through my vcr to my tv (because my tv is a few years old, it doesn't have the proper outputs to be hooked directly to the receiver).
The problem is: When watching a dvd, the screen gets dark for 10-15 seconds, then gets bright again for 5-10 seconds, then dark again. It does this repeatidly. Any thoughts?
hi, i'm new to the world of dvd. i own an XMS-950 dvd player. problem is, during playback, i only get background sounds of the movie?. i know it's to do with the audio setup. is it an obvious situation and are you able to explain the problem and what to do?
I have done alot of research because I wanted to get my home theatre system right the first time. I'm stationed in Italy and have attended over 40 symphonies and as many opera's, believe me my house sounds like a concert hall. I didn't pay much more than $1500 dollars for my system, which consists of two Bose's 601, a Bose center channel, two Bose 201's, bookshelf rears, and a powered 10' Yamaha YAM-YSTSW320 subwoofer. I currently play cd's off of a Sony play station with the optical cable running into a $500 dollar Denon receiver. I get my symphonic reproductions, as well as top notch home theatre that rumbles my walls, leaps me out of my seat, and has me dogging bullets and laser blast, but I still have not solved the problem of low dialogue when playing a movie. What can be done about this?

Call the radio station. Have them change their signal. Their coming in through a local cell tower which eventually will end up leading to stranger things like your car starting without keys.
Hi Rob nice to meet u !! I have had this happen to me as well, what it is is the DVD disk it's self..What i mean is the door-knob that made it in the studio, wasn't very good...to bad !!! Grab another copy you will see it will be the same, only a copy in the UK, will be by someone else behind the controls..I'm sure the big boys have noticed it as well Rob...I have seen this on CD's as well...So in short, its not your system at all, as you know, as you play other DVD's its all kool..Just that movie !!... One thing you could do is a tweek there, only if you have a another amp to could spare, a more powerfull one, then the one in your receiver, make sure the amp has a gain control, so you have 100% control over the volume as your front channels ... left and right, will be set just by , the way your volume is being played in normal fashion. But thats going to extreme there, and a person should not have to do that, if in fact the person making the master cut, was paying attention....PS..Try a VHS tape...just might be the ticket !!! Donald L. Suedmeier nice to meet you >>all drop me a note...thanks all Dazzz@Earthlink.net
Hi I am new to DVD put just purchased a Panasonic Sc-MT1.What I would like to know is, can i use it when whatching normal TV, with the surround sound, same as when I play a VCR? I used to do this with my Hi fi system.Someone said apart from the fact I can watch DVD`s, I can get shut of my hi fi system. so far i have had no success. apart from when watching DVD`s, then I have the full home theater surround sound.Anyone help please.
I own a Pioneer VSXD608 and I'm having a problem with sound sync when playing a movie that is DTS encoded. I set the receiver to recognize that it's a DTS sound source and it starts off fine, but after 1/2 hour or so, the sound starts to go off sync. I have the DVD player connected via an optical cable and have determined that it isn't the DVD player (happens on two different ones). Is this a problem of the receiver? If the optical cable is damaged or malfunctioning, can it cause the sound source to go off sync? Any ideas?
Hi I have a Sony home cinema system (just got it) DAV-SC5 its nice but how do get the tv stations and ntl programmes sound to run through these external speakers instead of my tv speakers.??? I have the DVD's and music etc running through ok. just not normal tv. must the system be set to something? they are connected via scart.
Many thanks.

Mark, You need to plug the stereo sound outputs of your tv (most tvs have them) to the analog inputs of your home theater. Then just switch the mode on your receiver to aux/input... whatever its called on your unit. to get full surround tv sound there will need to be a prologic 2 decoder on your system.
can any 1 tell me what range the front speakers should be compared to the back. And what's the best postion the speakers should be.Need help desperatly....
