TV RCA Jacks and Stereo Sound

I have a Magnavox TV bought at Sears in 2004. No headphone jack (who knew?). Bought RCA adapter - red & white audio outs which converge to a headphone jack. Problem - no amplification ability - important when I want to hear the audio over the sound of my treadmill - and only mono sound even though it's a "stereo" TV. Questions are: do I need my original remote to "activate" the stereo sound to my RCA jacks or is this inherently mono sound with no solution; and also is there a "mini" amplifier to attach to the RCA outputs, something with volume control which can be incorporated into my headphone jack system, or am I forced to buy a stereo receiver to attach to the TV? I have "in-line" volume control with my headphones but obviously that only turns down and doesn't amplify the volume to a good level. Don't want wireless headphones - trying to do this with wire components. Thanks.
