Sony DVD player/VHS Recorder SLV-D350P to Sharp TV problem

Please help an electronically challenged person.

The DVD/VHS is a year old. The Sharp TV is about 8 years old. VHS works fine but in the year we've had the Sony we've been able to watch exactly ONE DVD. Otherwise the picture breaks up continually, or the screen says this disk can't be viewed on this player. (These were all legit, clean disks with the right logos.) Here's how it's connected:

The red (right audio), white (left audio) and yellow (video) leads are plugged into the back of TV and into DVD Line Out.

The black cord goes from the DVD's OUT (TO TV) socket to the TV's ANT/ CABLE 75 (Greek letter Omega) slot.

This TV has no antenna. it's always been used only for videos. We're in the mountains and get no TV reception and don't have cable.

A friend told us to plug the DVD into an RF converter which plugs into the TV. Will this do it? Any advice to fix this pain in the butt will be greatly appreciated.

The problem is the DVD player, not the connections. Combos are poor quality to begin with and most of what Sony sells is unreliable at best.
