Sorry, I'm sure this is a simple question and I found similar questions in the archives but not quite the right answer.
I just purchased a HK 525 which supports 7.1. I'm deciding on a $500 range DVD and the Denon 1600 is tops so far, but it puts out 5.1. My question is, if the DVD I play is THX or 6.1, and I hook the dvd audio to the receiver using the optics connector, does that send the entire signal to the receiver to be decoded at the receivers highest level (7.1 or simulated THX in this case, and 6.1 for 6.1 encoded dvds?) In other words, does the optical output bypass the capabilities of the dvd player itself and leave the capability of the receiver to handle the audio portion?
Thanks, Mike

7.1 is decoded in the receiver. As long as you are using the fiber-optic, it will decode it. Fiber optic sends the whole signal to the receiver. The dvd player probably can decode, but it will only send 5.1, and that is through the 6 channel output. I am not familiar with any dvd players that decode ES/EX/7.1.
I just recently purchaced the 1600 and love it. I bought it from ecost.com, which sells refurbished models. They are an authorized dealer of refurbs by denon, so warrantee (90 days) is covered. I got a 3 year extended warrantee for $49. Shipping was free, so it all cost $299. I would suggest you look into that if you are interested. I did a lot of research, and found that other people where happy with purchace from ecost. One individual had to send theirs back, but had no problem getting a replacement.
