I saw this in an HHgregg and they were pushing this model above all others. It has a 52" screen and has LCos technology. It really had a great picture, but I have read threads about many problems with JVC HD-iLA. They said that JVC had worked out the kinks and this set should last many years. I know it has a bulb to replace when it goes out, but what about other complaints? What does this board say????

Lamps $200 pop, Light engines $1,500 -$1,700 a pop. Read thru the above thread and see it you see a "pattern".

If you do get a D-ILA, get one of the NEW DesignerPro sets that has a 3 position IRIS to improve black levels. The Z and G series don't have the iris and on dark scenes /movies you get poor blacks, detail is washed out because there is 110 watts of light going into the light engine when really 40 watts would do the job. I am of the mindset that too much light ENTERING the light engine overpowers the internals of the light engine and the black levels suffer because of the excessive light. (To fix this read about the Neutral Density Filter mod). ... Of buy one of the Designer Pro sets that have the 3 position IRIS.

If you read this REVIEW closely they talk about the set being TOO bright. I'm not sure if this review talks about it, but one review talked about modding /adjusting the light output down, but did not say how they did it. I would assume they did a ND filter mod on it as that is the only way to decrease the light levels, sort of replacing the lamp with a lower wattage lamp, and replacing the ballast to match the new lamp. Seeing how they don't make a 40 watt lamp (AFAIK) and they talked about taking the foot-lamberts down from well over 130 -150 foot-lamberts down to about 50... I would assume they did do a ND mod. Note in the review they are doing a 70 inch, and as the screen gets smaller the measured light output goes UP... The 61 inch they review being 166 foot-lamberts so a 52 inch is going to be more than that!

Here's the low-down:

If you watch daytime "football"... you will be happy because the brightness of the set.

If you watch Si-Fi, or movies that have dark scenes you aren't going to be happy with the G series, unless maybe you were to install, to do the ND Filter mod. (Neutral Density Filter). It's basically a filter (duh) that cuts down on the amount of light being transmitted. (I think the BEST place for a ND filter is BEFORE the light engine, to keep the excessive light from overpowering the internals of the light engine.)

Nobody around here seems to want to talk about "mods" around here, so here's a thread on the ND Filter mod:

(NOTE: To make the above link work replace the ZZ's with TWO p's ZZ=30&highlight=jvc+nd+filter+mod)

LCoS and D-ILA -- (Liquid Crystal on Silicon, by Toshiba and RCA, and Direct-drive Image Light Amplifier, by JVC) These are reflective chips with a polarizing LCD layer. Each pixel changes polarization to either reflect or block a light beam. Disadvantage: Black is not as dark as on a CRT. These chips are used in front and rear projector TVs.

Here is the REVIEW where they talk about the 70 inch set being way TOO bright. http://www.hometheatermag.com/rearprojectiontvs/905jvc/index.html

PS: I've read other reviews saying the same thing and my personal ownership of a D-ILA matches what they are saying. I'd like about a 40 watt lamp. 110 watts is way too bright.

I have a JVC HD52G786 (silver), the set has a excellent, vivid picture.
PQ is in the eye of the beholder, I liked the JVC over the other sets I was contemplating and the price is right, I also got the free stand. 8^)
