Just bought the Panasonic TH-42PWD8UK. The only thing I can't figure out is how to make the gray bars on the outer horizontal edges disappear completely. I tried adjusting the aspect ratio but it won't change modes because of the signal I'm receiving (at least that's what I'm guessing based on what it says in the instruction manual). I also adjusted the picture and stretched it horizontally as far as it would go. However, it still leaves gray bars on the left and right sides. They are about 1/4 inch on each side. The gray bars do not appear on the HD channels. What's interesting is I didn't have this problem with the Panasonic TH-42PX50U and I don't recall seeing gray bars on any of the tv's in the store. Any advice on how to get rid of the gray bars would be much appreciated. Thanks!

My Sony Plasma will apply gray bars to some programming (instead of black bars). I saw this as a plus when I was looking to buy as it is supposed to eliminate burn in issues with black bars. What I learned however is that programming that is not 16:9 sometimes has the black bars and sometimes the gray bars, haven't figured out under what conditions (signal) makes what color bars. I tend to use one of the zoom/stretch modes anyway to fill the 16:9 - my Sony does a great job of stretching the 4:3 image to 16:9 and filling the screen - no any color bars.
I can't figure out if your issue is that the bars are gray or if your picture won't fill the 16:9. Seems to me if you are getting an HD signal and your other channels are digital you should be able to stretch the 4:3 to fit the 16:9 screen completely.
