Strange cable TV Behaviour

Confused in NYC
Unregistered guest
Hello all, not sure if this is the right place to post this, but at wits end.

I purchased a Samsung LCD HDTV, and then picked up a digital cable TV box. Initially I had problems with the TV overloading my power (old NYC apartment)which I finally worked out. Then I switched it on only to find my cable TV no longer working (No picture).

Today the cable guy came and changed the Coax from the splitter (I have a cable modem) to the TV. Upon doing this the power surged, had to be reset, and so on...

So, I finally got everything up and running again but when I connect the cable box to the TV it the cable sparks and I stop right there.

The connection I am trying is an HDMI connection, should i attempt a component connection?

Also, I turned the cable box around at one point, the coax port touched my DVD play and caused a few sparks..

Do I need to somehow ground the cable box? coax? is my HDTV box broken?

Any help would be much appreciated

thanks
Mark
