I recently purchased a philips 42pf7320a from circuit city. The few HD channels I pick up ota are fantastic, but my SD channels from DirecTV are very soft images. I can compare the image directly, by hooking up my 32' CRT Toshiba side by side. The CRT shows much more definition in the face and very little distortion during football games while the Plasma screen underperforms.
Not sure, but are these TV's not able to produce these images b/c of source issues or is this an issue with my television. I've tried adding a signal booster to the cable line coming in, but no change in quality of picture.
What should I do?

I noticed the exact same issues. So instead of using the antannae cable from my BEV satellite box, I used the S-Video out and played around with some of the picture settings on my samsung hpr4272, namely contrast, brightness and sharpness until I got the best picture. It helped a little, but I will definitely get an HD receiver soon...
HD Plasmas in general do True HD signal ( which most HD cable companies dont deliver) well. DVDs, fairly well, and SD signals poorly. That being said, if a cable card option is available, that is usually preferred over a set top cable box, due to poor signal processing technology in these boxes in many instances.
You may actually want to compare an OTA signal with a set top box signal for SD TV to see if there is a difference.

I've read that you actually get a better picture from an ED(Extended Def.) display when viewing standard def. since their native resolution is 480p, the same as SD broadcasts.

All of the regular directv channels will look the same with a HD box it just allows you to pick up HD channels. Newbie,ED = enhanced definition. regular broladcast are also in 480 i not 480 p.
