My parents have 2 digital cable boxes. They don't watch one TV much. If I connected one of their cable boxes to my TV, would it work? I live in an apartment in the same town and have standard cable (CNN, etc). Would the cable company be able to tell?
without a digital signal from cable company, no it won't work. all you can do is save on the monthly rental fee.

The box is active at my parents' house. It already received a signal from the cable company to make it active. Does it have to get an updated signal on a regular basis to remain active?

You need to call up your cable service to get a signal sent to that particular box. You still won't be saving on the monthly rental fee, because either you or your parents will still have to pay for the second box.
