I am looking for a DVD player that can play double layer (DVD9) burnt discs and DVD+R 8x or 16x. I have a very old APEX 1100 that plays anything thrown at it including DVD+DL and DVD+R 8x. The other Apex 2600 also plays DVD+R 8x but cannot play DVD+DL (Verbatim DVD+DL burnt with Nero 6 at 4x). I also have a Toshiba SD-V291 which only plays DVD+R upto 4x although the manual says it plays only DVD-R. The Sony SLV-D360P (Combo DVD+VHS) cannot play DVD+DL either but it plays DVD+R 8x.

I found out that the APEX 1500 (not 1100 that I typo'ed above) and the Philips DVP642 that I just bought yesterday do play these new Double Player discs. I have several DVD+R 4x, 8x and these two have no problem playing them either. From my own research, most of the new HDMI upscale DVD players such as those from Sony are capable of playing DL discs.
