Tracking problems

I'm trying to make DVD copies of my old videotapes. Most of my tapes have been recorded on Sony machines (some in Nicam stereo). I'm using a newish Philips VCR with Nicam stereo to play the tapes back, but often my tapes mistrack, especially on the sound, and my DVD copies are ruined. The Philips VCR has always mistracked my tapes, even when it was brand new a few months ago. And if the tape is in long play, sometimes I don't get a picture at all. Is the simplest solution just to buy a Sony VCR with Nicam, and play back the tapes on that instead? If so, what do people think of the Sony SLV SE740? Cheers. Paul. UK

Philips in the U.S. is Funai, the cheapest trash made. Almost anything would be a step up. Here Mitsubishi VCRs are better than Sony.
