hey just wanted some feedback on the LG 42 inchers vs. the Phillips- (Sorry i dont know the mod #'s off the top of my head) i have about $2400 to spend and there is a LG at a brandsmart store nearby w/ built in tuner, cable box, 5000:1, that usually sells for 3k but on sale for 2500- as opposed to the phillips with the ambilight,(which is kinda cool but not that necessary,) 4000:1 i think- i dont think it has all the same bells and whistles but maybe its a better product in the long run-
hope my inquiry isnt too unspecific, ill double check the mod #'s
thanks for any and all responses

The LG is either the 42PY10X or the DU-42PX12X and the Philips 42PF9966/37., thouse are the only sets the salemen are allow to offer for $2,500.00. {or should i write $2,498.88}

If you value your money and you want to have a trouble-free, headache-free buying experience, you'll walk away from Brandsmart U.S.A. and never look back.

Most of the things specially these type of TVs are defective and the majority of the inventory is B-stock, that's why they can sell them for a lot less than Best Buy and Circuit City.

They have a 5-days exchange policy on LCDs and Plasmas, if you want to return and get your money back, they'll charge you a 25% re-stocking fee and will open the set in front of you to make sure you haven't stole any internal parts.

On top of that, the delivery service is awful, and if you complaint about it, the manager will blackflagged your name and phone number{s} and you will not be allow to purchase there ever again. That's the Brandsmart way.

Google "Brandsmart usa complaints" and read the many links of complaints you'll see what i'm talking about.

BTW, these are all great TVs

The LG DU-42PX12X have a DVI-HDCP input but is not CableCARD ready. The 42PY10X have an HDMI, 3-IEEE 1394 firewire inputs and is CableCARD ready.

The Philips is a beautiful set, Ambilight Light and Pixel Plus are wonderful viewing enhancements features, but lacks a CableCARD slot {no DCR} and screen orbiting features on most inputs., except the HDMI which it's self-activate because the signals receive on that input are framed with black bars and cannot be stretch.

Perrey,
so pay more to get the same tv at best buy or circuit city? can you explain how it is B-stock? the 42PY10X is the one im probably going with, b/c of the firewire, cable box, & card slot, - please talk me out of it if you disagree, or know of a better deal- thanks for your feedback.

I can't say it has been bad luck, but during the past 2-years i have had a total of 17-defective products that had have to be exchange and not only once but several times.

The last big thing that happen to me was with a Harman Kardon A/V receiver., a Samsung up conversion DVD player and a Samsung Home theater or should i said 4-receivers, 3-DVDs and 3-Home Theaters.

After the 4th. Harman Kardon failed it was exchanged for an Onkyo and that one also died. The managers keep authorizing exchanges until i had enough and preasure them to give me my money back. {Ever since this happen, i haven't purchase anything else.}

I purchase the same exact items {Except the Onkyo receiver} from http://www.onecall.com/ and i haven't had ANY problems with ANY of them. A similar incident happen in 2001 with a Philips Super VHS and a Sony VHS, the ones purchase at Brandsmart one was defective {electrical} and the other one broken [mechanical}. After returning them, i bought them at Circuit City, and both were OK, i still have the Philips, but the Sony gave up 2-years ago.

On three separate occasions i had serious incidents one was with a blender that melted while using it after 2-months, another was with a convention wall oven that almost burn the kitchen down on my previous residence after 32-days of ownership., And the one i consider the most serious after the oven was with the battery pack of a HP Pavilion notebook which blew up during the initial charge. Everytime a product line purchase at that store becomes "mysteriously" defective i immediately stop purchasing it from them.

So for me it's no more notebooks, no more microwave ovens, not more blenders, no more A/V receivers, no more DVDs and VHS and now no more plasmas TVs from Brandsmart U.S.A.

Think about this., Brandsmart with it's 5-stores has more returns on defective merchandise than any other electronic retailer in the nation, not even Best Buy., i had purchase the same merchandise i got from them, from other retailers and even online e-tailers and none of thouse purchases were defective. How could you explain that? i'll tell you, everythig they sell is B-stock that's approved by the manufacturers and passed with original waranties.

The 42PY10X it's a great set for a good price, unfortunately what kills the deal {for me} is their policies and the fact that most purchases have either been destroy during delivery or become defective right after their 30-day "we'll take care of it" policy.

After my 4-plasma DUDs, i asked the managers for my money back, they refuse, so had no other choice but to get another brand of plasma, the one i choose was the 42PF9966/37 and fortunately for me, it hasn't gave me any problems. <**knock>

Buyer beware.

If your interested in the LG i think you can get it for a good price at Circuit City. They **love** to price match Brandsmart's prices.

brandsmart IS shady- thanks for the advise to scrutinize their stock. i went back yesterday, to take another look at the LG-42PY10X, the salesman said that they had sold almost 300 in 3 weeks, and had only 16 left 2 days ago- yesterday they had 2 left- so i walked away not wanting to get stuck with a floor model or worse.
for $2500 that was a great price- CC has the LG-42PY12X for about $300 more or so- are their any other 42in that are comparable to the LG for less than 3k? like i said the firewire, cable box, tuner & card slot, are what has me sold on the LG-is there any difference b/w 42PY10X & the 42PY12X?
im thinking about waiting until the 4th quater of the year to buy, maybe prices will start to drop in the coming months- it will take some discipline to wait with football season approaching rapidly-
thanks perrey

Come on! they barely sell 5 a day much less 300-in 3-weeks! that's bull...

Talk to the managers at your local Circuit City explain to them you had a horrible experience with Brandsmart and you would like to give your business to them but their price is a bit higher than what Brandsmart is currently selling it.

Ask them if they could price match the competition., it always helps to "walk away" if you don't agree to their price. You'll see how quick the managers will call headquaters and will match the unadvertised price from Brandsmart.

Talking is the best bargain tool we consumers have!, They won't let you walk away and loose a sale.

There is no such thing as "B" stock for LG and Phillip, I work for a major manufacterer and sell to BrandsMart Circuit City and Best Buy and the same merchandise gets sent to all three of these retailers.

I recently purchased a LG 50px4dr, since then I have read reveiws that say the functions on the remote are unreliable and the built in DVR also misfunctions. Need your feed back on this model as I am still in the 30 day time frame. Was also concerned with a built in DVR if that would get too hot and create problems. The other plasma we looked at was the panasonic 50phd500u, I think that's right, anyway I know it ended in 500u. Thanks for your help and information.

Have a brand new Philips 37" LCD television. Cablevision has sent two techs 4 times with different Scientific Atlanta cards. Same problem every time. They plug the card in, set things up with the head end office. Everything looks great for about an hour or so...and then the TV locks up. After unplugging and turning on a message appears "CableCard - Firmware upgrade in process" The Cablevision techs told me it would take an hour (or two at most)...twelve hours later (and three more visits and four more cards) AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. I called techs at Scientific Atlantic and Philips. Bought a USB (1gig) flash (or Jump?) drive and downloaded the firmware update for the television on Philips site. Loaded it into the television and VOILA....NOTHING CHANGED. Called Cablevision AND Scientific Atlanta and had them in a three way call. Scientific stated that the problem must be due to outdated software on the cards and insisted that the Cablevision techs upgrade the card at their office and test it before sending it out with the field tech. DUH. They return with another bad card. Now I understand that the Cablevision guys HAVE NO UP-TO-DATE CARDS. They also have a bug in being able to update the card remotely it appears...at least with this TV. Loads the channels ok...and somehow starts to look for a CC firmware upgrade script. Cablevision and others have lobbied against CableCard since it's inception...it appears they are winning the battle.

Sure wore me down. I now have a set top box on the floor in front of a system designed for cablecard....wires all over the place (since I can't use my correct component cable hook up) and a picture that isn't as good as CC. Obviously one hand doesn't have a clue about what the other is doing. Philips, Scientific Atlantic and Cablevision should really get together on this issue and resolve this. THIS TV at this price (at COSTCO WITH A LIFTIME GUARANTEE AND RETURN POLICY) is going to be a HUGE SELLER. Cablevision will spend countless field tech hours (as in sitting there watching the TV with the customer) and go through thousands of cards (hardware ok software not updated?).... People who don't have patience will return the sets to Costco (Return Authorization anyone?) Scientific Atlantic will be asked to cover Cablevision (etc.) extended field service hours AND eat the "bad" cards.....isn't there enough lost money involved in all of this to correct the problem? Cablevision was nice enough (finally) to install the temp STB at no charge until they get this resolved. I wonder how they should compensate me for over three days time trying to fix their headaches?

I am having the same exact problem with the 37" philips. I am on my second cablecard - soon to be a third. I have yet to call Atlanta Scientific, but I think that is in order tomorrow.

I just had cablevision techs over to set up a cable card on my new philips 37. After 3 hours, the tv left out channels. I called Philips with the cablevision tech there. They talked and after 5 minutes agreed it was a "combatibility issue between the philips and the scientific atlanta card". I packed up the TV and will be returning it tomorrow. Really disapointing. But why spend money for a cable card and not be able to use it. Can anyone recommend a good 37" LCD HDTV cable card/cablevision compatible tv?
