Phillips 42" plasma - won't auto shift

We have a Phillips 42" HDTV plasma TV, with the following hookups:
HDTV cable box connects to TV using DVI-D + audio
HDTV cable box also splits to a Sony combo DVD/VCR
the VCR portion connects to the TV using the CVBS cables (AV1)
the DVD connects using Monster RGB cables (AV3)

The problem - when we watch a HD channel, the picture comes up in a small, off center box. We can zoom in, and cut off the right side of the picture. The auto-align feature is always greyed-out, regardless of the signal. If we watch through the VCR, the picture is fine, though it's a lower quality signal. Why isn't the TV recognizing the HD mode?

The Aspect Ratio in your TV must be set to 'FULL' when watching HD presentation. Your cable box must also be configured to output signal to a 16:9 display. If the HD channel is presenting a 4:3 digital material, you can't zoom it without losing vital information since the black/gray bars are part of the presentation.
With viewing via the VCR, you are viewing the low resolution output (480i) which is downcoverted to SDTV.
