Can you change the resolution on an HDTV like you would on a PC ? Say I'm watching Law and Order on standard cable can I just select the 1080i setting and get the better resolution or do I need an HDTV signal.

SD in = SD out. HD in = HD out. Your TV will line double, scale, stretch and zoom but it will not be able to recreate accurately missing data which is what you are hoping it will do.
