480i to 480p improvement?

I currently have a Sony KDF-50WE655 (LCD RPTV) and a non-progressive scan DVD player (480i output). What kind of improvement will I see if I upgrade my current DVD player to one which supports progressive scan or one that does upscaling?

I hear the HD-DVD players will be out by years end, but I don't want to spend 1000 bucks on a new player so I would wait for the price to come down a bit and for the Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD war to end :-)
