Hello all i am looking to buy a new cheap DVD player. I want it to play all formats but mainly i want it to hook up to my existing amp and speakers. I want to get my 5.1 working with the new player.

This is my current amp

I looked at this Teac today

The salesman told me that by using an optical cable i will get 5.1 sound. Is this true? Would i be better off paying a little extra and getting the next model up that says its a 5.1

Would it make a difference?

Thanks all

Yes, the idea with digital interconnect is to pass DD or DTS bitstream to receiver. The latter then converts it to analogue surround sound. Just check that you have a LFE (i.e. subwoofer) output on receiver for the ".1" channel.

The main purpose for 5.1 analogue out is high-resolution audio (SACD and DVD-A). It seems neither of the Teacs handle this format. If you wish to check out hi-rez, there are f.e. inexpensive Pioneer multiformat players. But you would need a receiver with 5.1 input too, to get hi-rez in surround.

Cheers
