HK? Denon? Need DVD Player Buying Help

I just returned a Toshiba SD5970 after a HUGE letdown in the quality of the picture. I figured with up conversion and an HDMI connection it would be pretty good, but my $30.00 Wal-Mart DVD player puts out a better picture!!

Now I am in the market for another DVD player in the $200.00 range (plus or minus $50.00). After doing some online research, I have gathered that the Harmon Kardon DVD22 and the Denon 1910 are good choices. Can anyone out there offer up any recommendations or input or suggestions?

I am running a Sony 51" KP51WS520 HDTV and a Yamaha HTR5730 Receiver. I don't listen to music with this equipment, it is strictly a home theater setup, so I am not sure if SACD and DVD Audio is something I need to consider either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

hi zach,

i'm not exactly an expert in this field, but i am an enthusiast.

i'm surprised that the upcoding toshiba was no good. did you get one of those calibration discs? there are two that are popular: Avia and DVE. You pop it into your DVD player and it fine tunes all of your DVD player and TV settings for optimum picture quality. i would recommend using one of these discs before judging the DVD player. i have not experienced the toshiba, but i am still surprised because as i understand it, toshiba was the creator of our current DVD standard. you would think they would make a quality player.

general advice that i can offer: get an upcoding DVD player with the Faroudja DCDi technology in it.

hope that helps,
ryan

No, I don't have one of those DVD's, but I thought they were for sound only. I didn't know they did video as well. I do plan on getting one, but how does it "fine tune" the picture by itself?

The only basis I have for not liking the Toshiba (besides the horrible remote that simply doesn;t work)was when I swapped in my $30.00 player, the picture was two folds better. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there are any adjustment on the Toshiba.

like i said, i have not tried the toshiba. actually, if you read this forum, a lot of people don't like the toshiba, so you're not alone.

also, the calibration disc does fine tune picture quality. but it does not exactly do it by itself. it's like software, it will guide you through a process, and the end result should have vastly improved pq.

Check out the Pioneer 578. It has reviews in the review section of ecoustics, as well as comments in the forum. I have not tested it yet but am considering it, esp. since it also has DVD audio and SACD. No DVI/HDMI, but for under $200 you can't have everything.

It's because your TV isn't digital. The benefit of this dvd player is that it WILL deliver a pure digital signal to the source without having to be converted at all from analog to digital or vice versa. With your TV, the signal is having to be converted from digtal to analog. And when you convert, it creates distortion. You need a fixed pixel display. Plasma, LCD, DLP, LCD Projection. It sucks.

In the caes of this, the Panasonic DVD-XP30/50 and RP82 and the Denon 1600 still are top rated considering it's price.
