VHS / MiniDV / DVD-R Quality Question

I am currently in the process of converting my old VHS and MiniDV tapes to DVD.

Has anybody had experience in testing various formats and strategies for maintaining (as much as reasonable) original quality?

If I simply use my JVC MR-MV1S (VHS / DVD-R) and burn DVDs (using Firewire for the MiniDVs) will that save enough of the original quality of the recording for basic viewing?

I am not planning on producing any commercial quality videos but I am concerned with losing some of the sharpness and color quality with the data compression required by the DVD recorder.

-Should I maintain the tape library?

-Should I copy the VHS library to MiniDV via an S Video port?

-Is the original resolution and quality such that the DVD will be more than sufficient?

-Is the answer the same for the VHS library and the MiniDV library?

Lots of questions I know. Thanks in advance.
