I was wondering. I am getting this set on Monday with Comcast HD box, component cables. Will this set show 1080i programs as well as 780p programs ? My HD box should do the down conversion, no ?
Thanks

If you have a Comcast hi def box and a full HDTV -you will have no problem
The Comcast hi def lineup will originate either as 1080i or 720p, depending upon each channel.
Your television then makes any conversion necessary
Either 1080i (e.g large crt rear projectors) or a 720p (plasmas or lcd, or lcd projectors etc) - will produce a wonderful picture
The set that I purchased is an ED set. Now Comcast has told me that their HD box will downconvert the 720 signal. I am wondering if it will do the same for the 1080 signal.

HI DEF singles (i.e 1080i or 720p) will both be downconverted - generally producing a picture approximately equal to DVD quality.
However you cannot get a true HDTV signal from an EDTV regardless of any downconverting or upconverting abilities of typical Comcast boxes - e.g Motorolas - or any box for that matter
Unfortunately as to your original question "Will this set show 1080i programs as well as 780p programs?" The simple is no -not in original quality.
thanks for the help. i fully understand that i will not get the "true" HD picture, I was more concerned with not getting any picture at all due to a 1080 signal having to be downconverted to a 480.
The Panasonic Consumer Models don't accept 720p signals on the Component or HDMI (DVI for Previous Models)inputs. YOU MUST set the Comcast hi def box to output 1080i or no (sometimes distorted)picture will be displayed. Only the Internal tuners (When using the coax inputs) and the PC input will accept 720p signals though.

Plasmas have fixed pixels. EVERY SIGNAL will be up/down converted to the Display's native resolution (852x480 for TH-37PD25UP).
You won't be losing any information, The Internal scaler in the Panasonic will scale the picture to fit the 852x480 resolution.

1080i Sources - They'll be down converted to 480p
720p Sources - You must set the STB to output 1080i. So the Display will accept those upconverted signals and down convert to 480p. If 720p is selected, no picture will be displayed.
480i Sources - They'll be converted to 480p
And even though the ED displays have only 852x480 resolution, a good HD source will look simply stunning specially on the 37" ED Display (Compared to the 42" ED Model) due to its smaller pixels.
I want to thank you for your great advice. I realy appreciate it. I will make sure the Comcast installer tomorrow sets the box to output 1080i.
One last question, I have an older Sony DVP-S560D DVD player that does not have progressive scan. I will be connecting to my Plasma through S-Video. Will the TV handle the progressive scanning, or should I go out and buy a new DVD player ?
I do have a "newer" Phillips DVD726 that has progressive scan that I purchased over the summer as a TV room DVD player. Should I use that one ?
