My DVD player will freeze for about a second or two and you will see a still picture on the screen. Is this normal? If not, what causes it?

This is due the layer change on the disc - a DVD stores the video on sandwiched layers. When it changes between 2 layers, the laser must refocus to the other layer - hence the short freeze.
