New here (obviously), so dont bash me if im posting this in the wrong forum.

Just a question about setting up surround sound on my new tv.

My tv says it is 8.1 compatible and has a digital optical out.

Does this mean i do not need to get a receiver for surround sound on this television? Is it possible to just buy the speakers and woofer and connect directly to the tv?

The blu-ray player i bought also says its 7.1 compatible. Does that mean I can use it as a receiver if im not able to use the tv?

Any help/advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No. What those specs mean ithat the units have the components and chips needed to process the signals correctly.

You still need an amp or receiver in order to amplify and send the proper sound to the correct speakers.
