looking to play occasional dvd and music, 20 X 12 room without having to put large floor speakers. salesmen suggests b&w dm601 s3 speakers with asw600 subwoof and sony strda1000es reciever (or marantz sr6300). think it will sound good? willing to go for more $ now if it is worth it for mid range set-up. appreciate the input.

John:

Do not buy the Sony--it is poorly built (uses very cheap parts) and it sounds like crap. The B+W speakers are too nice to put it with a poor receiver like the Sony. They are trying to sell that thing as the latest thing, the "all digital amplifier," but it is still the usual Sony cheap parts bin special.

The Marantz would make for a very nice system when paired with the B+Ws. If you can afford to step up to the Marantz 7300, it will make for a really nice system. the 7300 is a very special sounding receiver IMHO.

I ahve to agree with Hawk, the Siony receivers are pretty well all crap, I used to own one, since thenI have upgraded to an Onkyo TX-SR701, the difference is amazing, as far as the speakers, B&W are allways a good choice.
