Just won a Samsung LN40B530 tv and need help connecting it to my receiver and dvd player.
Receiver HK AVR310
DVD Samsung P421 (no hdmi port)
Also have comcast cable with Motorola digital tv receiver.
The salesman at Best Buy told me I need a new dvd player for the best picture quality.

Any help getting everything hooked up today would be really appreciated!

Greetings Dan,

Assuming that you aren't planning on taking the "Best Buy" "salesman's" advice, the best way to hook this particular system up will be to take the component video out of the DVD player directly to the TV and the digital audio run separately to the receiver. The cable box will be similar in that you can either run HDMI or component video to the TV and digital audio to the receiver.

Get all of your cabling from:

Thanks for the advice. Is this your recomendation..

HDMI from cable box to TV
Digitial Audio (optical) out from TV to Receiver (in)
Component from DVD to TV
Digital Audio from cable box to receiver.
The dvd player has video out (yellow cable)/S-video out or component video out. Use component?

Thanks!

HDMI from cable box to TV - yes

Digital Audio (optical) out from TV to Receiver (in) yes

Component from DVD to TV yes

Digital Audio from DVD to receiver.

The dvd player has video out (yellow cable)/S-video out or component video out. Use component? yes, with standard DVD you won't get any better picture than you can with component video cables

Jim,
Thanks for all your advice. To make sure I have all the cables ordered and get everything connected properly, can you tell me how many connections I should have in total? I.E., HDMI from tv to cable box is 1 connection.

Thanks!

I am sorry Dan, I made an error and may be leading you down the wrong path because there is no audio connection from the TV to the receiver as is suggested above. The audio from both the cable box and the DVD will go to the receiver and the video from both units will go directly to the TV.

So the answer to your latest question is that If you start from scratch you will need 4 cables:

One 1 HDMI (from cable box HDMI out to TV HDMI in)
Two 2 Digital audio (optical) cables
a. from cable box to receiver
b. from DVD to receiver
One 1 Component video (from DVD to TV)

Sory for the confusion. I hope this helps
