The more I research this subject, the more I suffer from information overload so I am hoping you guys can help me out. I have a dedicated theater room 13x17 that will be used for movies only. I have $1700 budgeted for a receiver and speakers. I am looking at the Paradigm Cinema 90 package but have read that it "lacks midrange". Can someone recommend a nice speaker/receiver combo in my price range?

I screwed up my hearing awhile back so going to a store to listen doesn't really work for me, but plenty of people will be using this theater room so I wanted to provide an awesome experience. Thanks for the help!

Interesting situation... One problem though. Everybody is going to have a different opinion of what sounds good, especially the folks that roam this board.

Who are you expecting to derive the most pleasure from this home theater? If its one or two people, take them shopping! If its just random people that you don't know that you want to "impress", you may as well stick with the Paradigm. They're a reasonably well recognized brand name after all.

Stephen gives some good advice, though I'll go out on a limb here and say if you're listening to movies only, "bigger" speakers are going to be a better bet. So here's the system "I" would pick if it was me (all my opinion):

Buy 3 of these for the front speakers:

Buy 2 of these for the surrounds (or 4 if you want 7.1):

Subwoofer:

Receiver:

Use what's left for stands or wires or whatever. You will have a hard time beating the quality of respectable internet-direct companies' speakers. They design them in the US, build them in Asia and sell them direct to us for way cheaper than a brick and mortar store can sell the other brands. There's a 30-day trial on those speakers as well so if you don't like them just send them back. This should be a great system for home theater.
