One of my friends is thinking about buying a Bose Acoustimass 10 series 3 setup off of eBay. I know most forums dis on Bose which is why i never bought them. I was wondering if anyone had a better suggestion for roughly $700 for a 7.1 speaker setup. He doesnt need a reciever just speakers.

Any ideas of links to nice products would be much appreciated :-)

Thanks

Couple of choices, lots of folks like the sound of Paradigms, look at the Cinema 70 system and buy 2 more bookshelves for $620 + shipping/tax http://www.paradigm.com/en/paradigm/rec-systems-9-1-2-2.paradigm

or http://hsuresearch.com/products/performance2.html

You can also do the Mission M70 speakers for a great price http://www.tsto.com/cgi-bin/TSTO.storefront/465da404004d189a2740ac10034105b5/Pro duct/View/2191

The center speaker is the M7C1, you can probably find it on eBay or somewhere. That puts you at only ~$300 for the speakers, so you have $400 to spend on a sub, possibilities are:

BIC H-100 http://cgi.ebay.com/BIC-Acoustech-H-100-12-500-Watt-Powered-Subwoofer-NEW_W0QQit emZ140121911135QQihZ004QQcategoryZ3275QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Energy S10.2 http://www.tsto.com/cgi-bin/TSTO.storefront/465da404004d189a2740ac10034105b5/Pro duct/View/2509

HSU VTF-1 (or any of the STF series) http://hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-1.html

AV123 X-Sub (you could even buy 2!) http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=subwoofers&product=12.1

There's other choices out there, but this should give you an idea what you're looking at. There's a TON of great 5.1 choices for $700, with 7.1 you can do stuff like the Paradigm system or get creative with the others. If you're friend wants a bigger front soundstage he can do something like http://www.tsto.com/cgi-bin/TSTO.storefront/465da463004e56942740ac10034105ff/Pro duct/View/2321 or http://www.tsto.com/cgi-bin/TSTO.storefront/465da404004d189a2740ac10034105b5/Pro duct/View/2639
or http://www.av123.com/products_category_brand.php?section=speakers&brand=55
in the fronts, then do the Mission M70s for the side and rear speakers, then a sub.

If you need more explanations of these just ask, room dimensions, speaker size and type of listening (% music/movies) is good info to give.
