Hi, we have just bought a plasma tv and already have a dvd player with surround sound system, sky+, Xbox and vcr what cables do we need to enjoy surround sound from tv, vcr, xbox and not just when we watch a dvd. in the shop they told us we needed a good scart between tv and sky+, a video and audio cable from the dvd player to tv, there was also mention of an optical cable, at the time we were not sure if we had a point on the dvd player, but on inspection we do. do we really need all these cables? and what do they do? do we have to do anything particular to enjoy surround sound for everything?

If you are using an all-in-one type surround sound that includes a DVD player, you will be limited by the number of inputs on the unit.

You are also dependent upon the source material, if your TV source is broadcast in surround sound and you have the proper inputs on your receiver then you will get surround sound...it goes for all your peripherals.
