HOOKING UP A SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM, CABLE BOX TO A LCD TV

We have never had one of these before. When I turn on the surround sound system, we get no sound unless we watch a DVD. I need help to hook this up so I can use the surround sound while watching TV. If yes hook up the cable box using digital coaxil or Red and white RCA cables to your receivers video 1 input. If no use Bernys' advice.
