Problems with durabrand audio output

sorry if this is in the wrong thread; it seemed like the most appropriate one i could find.

we recently purchased a durabrand 28" tv, since my sister just moved out and took her 22" tv we'd been borrowing.

my problem is; i'd been using the av-out sockets on the back of the tv to hook into an altec lansing 2:1 speaker setup, and did exactly the same thing with our new durabrand, but when we switch to the av channel for dvds or videos, the altecs continue to give us the tv sound, while the tv speakers (and *only* the tv speakers) output the dvd sound.

if you turn off the tv and leave the altecs on and the dvd playing, you can hear a very faint, crackly dvd audio coming from the speakers. i've tried the cables in the extra front-av sockets at the side of the tv, and exactly the same thing happens.

does anyone have any clue as to why this is happening and how i might fix it? or possibly anyone who's experienced the same problem?

any help greatly appreciated.
